Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski (1595-1640) was known in his lifetime as the Christian Horace. He was one of the most famous Neo-Latin poets of the Baroque, widely read, commented and translated throughout Europe. He was nominated Poet Laureate by Pope Urban VIII. Sarbiewski was also famous for his studies in rhetoric and critical works such as De perfecta poesi sive Vergilius et Homerus. His Latin poetry was read, translated and imitated also in England, especially from 1640 until the first half of the 19th century. The first edition of Sarbiewski's English translations, by George Hills, was published in 1646. From that time onwards, Sarbiewski was translated by a variety of poets ranging from Hills to such famous authors as Vaughan, Burns and Coleridge. His poetry was universally read in grammar schools and used as a medium of improving the knowledge of Latin during a period exceeding two centuries. Thanks to Sarbiewski, English poets started to imitate Horace, which was an important factor in overcoming the Pindaric tradition. Sarbiewski's oeuvre was also attractive owing to its immersion in various cultural traditions such as Stoicism, Ignatian spirituality, Platonism, and Hermeticism. This revised edition includes all known English translations of Sarbiewski's poems. The texts are accompanied by an introduction presenting the biography and works of Sarbiewski, as well as a short critical analysis of the translations included in the volume.

In 1969 a young Slovenian painter Vili Vaupotic arrives in London with the great hope that within two years his masterpieces will be exhibited in the Tate gallery, while he himself will be invited to the annual Queen's tea party for successful immigrants. (Sir William Wowpotitch?) Tea with the Queen is a bitter-sweet tale of lost illusions, rich with unexpected reversals and (self)reflections. The external narrative is merely a means whereby the author creates in front of the reader's eyes 'a stream of those aspects of reality that most people, because of their trivia-laden minds, no longer register'. The novel's admirable flow is interspersed with 'a cacophony of aggressive sounds' forcing their way into the minds of the characters from outside, revealing that 'the outside reality is kinder than the reality of our souls'. Tea with the Queen is thus a luxurious, vibrant story about eternal human fallibility, about our blindspots and hopes, mistakes and sorrows; in other words, as universal as a story can be. Thanks to the author's exceptional feeling for nuances, dialog and dramatic fabulation even such a long novel is a pleasure to read. In terms of narrative mastery, Tea with the Queen surpasses even the authorl's legendary Sorcerer's Apprentice, in the past 30 years the most widely read novel by any Slovenian writer.

The cultural ideal of motherhood in Victorian Britain seems to be undermined by Victorian novels, which almost always represent mothers as incapacitated, abandoning or dead. Carolyn Dever argues that the phenomenon of the dead or missing mother in Victorian narrative is central to the construction of the good mother as a cultural ideal. Maternal loss is the prerequisite for Victorian representations of domestic life, a fact which has especially complex implications for women. When Freud constructs psychoanalytical models of family, gender and desire, he too assumes that domesticity begins with the death of the mother. Analysing texts by Dickens, Collins, Eliot, Darwin and Woolf, as well as Freud, Klein and Winnicott, Dever argues that fictional and theoretical narratives alike use maternal absence to articulate concerns about gender and representation. Psychoanalysis has long been used to analyse Victorian fiction; Dever contends that Victorian fiction has much to teach us about psychoanalysis.
