It would have been a matter of no great difficulty to have carried out my original plan and to have filled many pages with such matter. The truth is, however, that although the earth's stores of value to men can be estimated in general terms there is as yet no sufficient basis for accurate quantitative reckonings. Thus while we can clearly foresee that the store of coal is certain to be so far exhausted within two or three centuries that it will have no considerable place in the arts, we cannot estimate the amount of this fuel with anything like statistical accuracy. It will, moreover, be readily understood, that oral instruction is naturally clothed in forms appropriate to itself, which are not those of a systematic and didactic exposition, such as is required by a book intended only for reading, or for the silent study of the closet. In the Opinion of the author, it should bring out in strong relief, even by venturing a dash of the pencil somewhat bold, the essential traits of the subject, in order to fix and deep en the impression, while the secondary features are thrown into the shade. 'truth, far from losing by this mode, will gain the advantage of being grasped in a manner at once more distinct, and more correct. March concludes his work with a discussion of projected and possible changes to geography that man has caused, and the potential impacts of these changes. Marsh was clearly well ahead of his time in terms of his environmental attitudes. Man and Nature is a plea to readers to recognize the value of our natural landscapes and to ensure their protection. His words are every bit as poignant today as they were when they were written. Man and Nature, or Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action is a seminal text of the conservationist movement. They travelled so little that they had no idea of its form or of its size. A few men who had studied the matter believed that the earth was a round ball, and that if one travelled straight on in any direction, he would in time return to the place from which he started. You can understand this by pushing your finger around on the outside of an orange, until it comes back to the starting-point. Christopher Columbus believed this, and went to Spain, hoping to obtain money to secure ships for a long voyage to prove it. Men were at that time in the habit of going to a land, called India, for spices, Silks, and jewels. To reach India from Spain they travelled thousands of miles eastward; but Columbus said that if the earth were round, like a ball, India might be reached by going westward across the ocean, and the distance would be much less.
