Excerpt from Man and the Earth These pages. They thus lack the apparent authority which such a presentation would have given them. It would have been a matter of no great difficulty to have carried out my original plan and to have filled many pages with such matter. The truth is, however, that although the earth's stores of value to men can be estimated in general terms there is as yet no sufficient basis for accurate quantitative reckonings. Thus while we can clearly foresee that the store of coal is certain to be so far exhausted within two or three centuries that it will have no considerable place in the arts, we cannot estimate the amount of this fuel with anything like statistical accuracy. Thus it is that the statements in this book should be taken as the judgments of an observer who has endeavored to inform himself as to the resources of the earth of value to men, who is confident that in the general terms in which these opinions are stated they have value as guides to conduct. Excerpt from Man and the Earth: A Simple Reader in Human Geography You all know that in England it is warmer in summer than in winter. Perhaps you have also noticed that the shadow cast by a stick at noon, when the sun is shining, is not always the same length. On mid-summer day the shadow is the shortest, while the shadow cast by the same stick on mid-winter's day is the longest. If you draw a line the same length as the stick, and another at right-angles to it the same length as the shadow, and then join the ends, you will have a line which shows the direction the rays of light and heat take in coming from the sun to the earth. Excerpt from Man's Mission on Earth The rapid sale of nineteen large editions of this little book is a convincing proof of how much it is required, and how ardently it is sought after by the public; in such cases an extensive and continued demand may be fairly considered the test of real and acknowledged utility; for people will not buy largely that which they do not want. With respect to my own position as connected with the work, the reader will naturally conclude that my pursuits have always been, and still are, devoted to the practice of the particular branch of the profession on which it treats. Such I unhesitatingly avow to be the case; and to those who may think proper to seek my counsel or place themselves under my care, I may simply remark, that I continue as zealous as heretofore in my practice, which I conduct with that honor and integrity which I have the satisfaction of knowing have never yet been violated. The great evil in life is procrastination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Earth and Man: Lectures on Comparative Physical Geography, in Its Relation to the History of Mankind This brief history of the present book will place the reader in a position to form a just Opinion of the work, and per haps will induce him to extend to it some indulgence. It will, moreover, be readily understood, that oral instruction is naturally clothed in forms appropriate to itself, which are not those of a systematic and didactic exposition, such as is required by a book intended only for reading, or for the silent study of the closet. In the Opinion of the author, it should bring out in strong relief, even by venturing a dash of the pencil somewhat bold, the essential traits of the subject, in order to fix and deep en the impression, while the secondary features are thrown into the shade. 'truth, far from losing by this mode, will gain the advantage of being grasped in a manner at once more distinct, and more correct. For nothing is less indispensable to true sci ence, - may the reader of these pages find it so, - than the scho lastic and doctoral robe, which is too often unnecessarily worn. This little work is not then a treatise on the subject indicated by its title the author would wish to consider this unforeseen publication, only as the forerunner of a more complete work, the materials of which, gradually collected during long years of study, and still daily accumulating, he hopes to arrange, and work out more at leisure, if not in the same form, at least in the same Spirit. However, he is confident that the man of science will find in this first sketch, the traces of serious and matured studies. Man And Nature written by George P. Marsh and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-16 with Science categories.

George Perkins Marsh is often considered America's first environmentalist. Perkins was a diplomat, author, and philologist, and far ahead of his time in terms of his views on the environment. Man and Nature, or Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action presents readers with the opportunity to read the words of the father of the environmental movement in the United States. The book begins with an introduction that presents ancient Rome as a case study for the importance of conservationism. Marsh uses a variety of sources to paint a picture of Rome as an area ripe with natural resources that were over utilized and eventually destroyed by man's actions. The second chapter discusses the effects of transferring and modifying vegetable and animal species, and argues for organic life as vital to environmental sustainability. The book goes on to examine specific ecosystems, and the impacts man has had on them, including forests, bodies of water, and deserts. March concludes his work with a discussion of projected and possible changes to geography that man has caused, and the potential impacts of these changes. Marsh was clearly well ahead of his time in terms of his environmental attitudes. Man and Nature is a plea to readers to recognize the value of our natural landscapes and to ensure their protection. His words are every bit as poignant today as they were when they were written. Man and Nature, or Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action is a seminal text of the conservationist movement. It is a must read for any modern environmentalist, and a sad reminder that the issues facing man today have gone unresolved for nearly two centuries. This is an important work and one that deserves to be read by a wide audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Earth as a Whole Its Form. - Hundreds of years ago, before America was discovered, men thought the earth was flat. They travelled so little that they had no idea of its form or of its size. A few men who had studied the matter believed that the earth was a round ball, and that if one travelled straight on in any direction, he would in time return to the place from which he started. You can understand this by pushing your finger around on the outside of an orange, until it comes back to the starting-point. Christopher Columbus believed this, and went to Spain, hoping to obtain money to secure ships for a long voyage to prove it. Men were at that time in the habit of going to a land, called India, for spices, Silks, and jewels. To reach India from Spain they travelled thousands of miles eastward; but Columbus said that if the earth were round, like a ball, India might be reached by going westward across the ocean, and the distance would be much less. He therefore asked the king of Spain for Ships and men to make such a journey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
