Man Ray written by Arthur Lubow and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-14 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A biography of the elusive but celebrated Dada and Surrealist artist and photographer connecting his Jewish background to his life and art Man Ray (1890–1976), a founding father of Dada and a key player in French Surrealism, is one of the central artists of the twentieth century. He is also one of the most elusive. In this new biography, journalist and critic Arthur Lubow uses Man Ray’s Jewish background as one filter to understand his life and art. Man Ray began life as Emmanuel Radnitsky, the eldest of four children born in Philadelphia to a mother from Minsk and a father from Kiev. When he was seven the family moved to the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, where both parents worked as tailors. Defying his parents’ expectations that he earn a university degree, Man Ray instead pursued his vocation as an artist, embracing the modernist creed of photographer and avant-garde gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz. When at the age of thirty Man Ray relocated to Paris, he, unlike Stieglitz, made a clean break with his past.

"This small volume represents the somewhat larger volume of Man Ray's Paris studio. Inside, we shall see some of the images which inhabited the space where so many other images were made. Here, unassuming objects once stood on tables to be rayographed - dissolved into their masks. A leftover head still rests on a shadow, its portrait taken ... taken ... not as something taken away by a burglar in a bag, but as something taken into consideration. -- from the Introduction by William H. Gass Man Ray's widow Juliette died in 1991, and her brothers formed a trust to foster worldwide recognition of this important artist. Following a disastrous flood in the studio in 1992, the art works and many of the personal effects that it had contained were put in storage, eventually to be sold off to pay taxes. Before any of these events took place, however, Ira Nowinksi photographed the studio inside and out, preserving the Paris studio on film exactly as it had been during Man Rays final days. The beautifully composed, richly printed black-and-white photographs allow, in Gass's words, "memories to regain their rights. Layer after layer, print upon print, level above level, art echoing art: I think Man Ray would have loved the idea."--Publisher's website.

Man Ray (1890 –1976) was a pioneer of the Dada movement in the United States and France and a central protagonist of Surrealism. Today he is one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century, celebrated above all for his innovative and often seductively glamorous photography. Surprisingly, given Man Ray’s key role in the history of early-twentieth-century Modernism, a comprehensive collection of his writings on art has not been published in English until now. Man Ray: Writings on Art fills a conspicuous gap in scholarship on the artist and his period. It brings together his most significant writings, many of them published here for the first time. These occasionally quixotic texts, which include artist books, essays, interviews, letters, and visual poems, reveal the incredible scale of the artist’s output and the remarkable continuity of his aesthetic and political beliefs. This volume offers a long overdue vision of Man Ray as someone who used words both as a creative medium and as a means of articulating ideas about the nature and value of art. With richly reproduced illustrations, it provides powerful insight not only to scholars of art history and academics, but also to working artists and those who count themselves as Man Ray fans.

Avant Garde Film written by Alexander Graf and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Art categories.

This volume on avant-garde film has emerged as part of a wider reassessment of 20th century avant-garde art, literature and film carried out in the framework of a research project at the University of Edinburgh. It paves the way for a fresh assessment of avant-garde film and develops its theory as an integral part of a newly defined conception of the avant-garde as a whole, by closing the gap between theoretical approaches towards the avant-garde as defined on the basis of art and literature on the one hand and avant-garde cinema on the other. It gathers contributions by the most esteemed scholars in the field of avant-garde studies relating to the ¿classical¿ avant-garde cinema of the 1920s, to new trends emerging in the 1950s and 1960s and to the impact that innovative technologies have recently had on the further development of avant-garde and experimental film. The contributions reflect the broad range of different moving-image media that make up what we refer to today simply as ¿film¿, at the same time as reconsidering the applicability of the label ¿avant-garde¿, to offer a comprehensive and updated framework that will prove invaluable to scholars of both Moving Image Studies and Art History disciplines.
