b>Kirkus Discoveries Review A well-intentioned but meandering discussion of Gods sublimity that frequently sinks into invective on the evils of organized religion. Luyinduladios central claims about enlightened religious inquiry are admirablethey should be articulated and written about more often. The author argues that we should access our religious urges through our rational capacities. He further suggests that God is too great to be confined by any one religious tradition or sacred textor even, really, by language. This is where the movement religious scholars call negative theology beginswith the suggestion that any God we can imagine would necessarily be too sublime, too inexplicable to be conceived. (God is in some ways the hidden and inaccessible knowledge of Luyinduladios title.) However, even the great negative theologians were ultimately stymied in their efforts to explain religious experience on their own terms. Meister Eckhart lapsed into mysticism, and Saint John of the Cross into gorgeous but obscure poetry. Luyinduladio has similar problems, but without the genius of an Eckhart or John of the Cross, he falls too often into wandering rants. Some are expectedthe author abhors bigotry, religiously motivated violence, sectarian arrogance and the ignorance of the zealot. Others, however, come straight from left field. He castigates the second Bush administration for sending the United States to war in Iraq on false evidenceand Colin Powell for abetting. Luyinduladio goes on about the evils of slavery and applauds the archbishop of Canterbury for discussing the possibility of reparations. These are valid complaints but seem hugely out of place in a tract on God and spirituality. Further, too many of the authors central insights come straight from the religious imagination of one of the Founding Fathers, Thomas Paine. In fact, so fond is the author of Paine that he repeatedly quotes him at long lengthonce for a laughable 22-page stretch. Readers may wonder if they should go straight to Paine instead. Natural theology is the project of articulating, defending and CntlClzmg arguments for the existence and nature of God without the aid of special revelation. Philosophical theology, which employs the rational methods of natural theology, is not restricted to premises that are discernible through observation and reason; it may rightly employ premises that are knowable through special revelation. While the project of natural theology may be construed as an attempt to demonstrate God's existence, one cannot ignore the importance of using reason or experience to understand, determine or assess attributes. One will want to know at the conclusion of a proof in natural God's theology if one has proved the existence of God and not merely the prim urn mobilum, source of moral obligation or a committee of finite designers; while God may be the prime mover and designer of the cosmos, none of these attributes alone is sufficient for making a claim to divinity. It is, therefore, difficult to distinguish sharply the project of natural theology from philosophi cal theology. The project of classical natural theology has been the attempt to prove God's existence and nature with arguments that employ premises that all rational creatures are obliged to accept.

This book was written in my attempt to open the eyes of readers whose knowledge and understanding of God has been twisted and lied by the demagogues for so long. When it comes to faith and how it is practiced, readers should learn that people yesterday are no different from most people today. The only difference is the sophistication of current methods compared to what they have in the past. Giving example of this reality is by dissecting the elements of the Ten Commandments. You will note that man’s flaws yesterday as described in the Bible reflect the same flaws of our man today. We have to accept that man has been the same since the beginning of time. However, we cannot blame humanity for what they have been made to believe. Early thinkers, who are Jews, started the idea of one God based on signs, predictions, observations, miracles, and assumptions. They become successful in convincing the world that they have the first-hand knowledge of God and people should listen to them. Their orientation was formulated based on faith with little logic of science. People are generally unacquainted by predatory preaching, ignorant and vulnerable to the influence of more advance demagogues. People are ambushed by strong rhetoric, which the demagogues always have the upper hand. It is fair to say that they are led wrongly, exacerbated by ignorance, and simply taken advantage of that vulnerability. Let me conclude by saying that nobody can really understand the true nature of God. We simply have a hint of him, but we can uphold his power and benevolence by following the natural laws he imbedded in all of us. With that, the true love and salvation we can offer him is upholding the golden rule “Do to others as you would have them to you” (Luke 6:31). So help us God.

From foreword: This book is a collection of my articles which had been published in theological journals in Indonesia such as ―Verbum Christi‖ and ―Jurnal Teologi Reformed Indonesia (JTRI).‖ There are five articles, some of them are writings on Christian apologetics particularly in Van Tillian presuppositionalism perspective. These papers are not arranged according to the dates of their publications but they are managed according to the topics in which the apologetics writings are placed in the first three chapters. The significance of Van Tillian apologetics to Muslims is the first chapter, then the second chapter speaking on Christian response to the idea of non-duality of Shankara, the great thinker of Hinduism. The third deals with the value of propositional truths in maintaining Christian faith. The last two papers are, first, my research on the polemic about the covenant of grace that happened within Reformed Churches in Netherlands (RCN) in 1940s, and the second discusses about emotion and its relevance to Christian church today. I would like to thank to the editors of Verbum Christi and the JTRI for their permission to republish these materials.
