Sailing past the edge of the mapped world, the swashbuckling poems in this collection encounter remnants of nautical history and myth. "Across the dying moon, across this dead glass sea," we come upon pirates and ghost ships, sea nymphs and wraiths. Shoulder to shoulder, the natural and the supernatural come to life among the surging waves of these adventurous and dynamic poems. Many meet their ends out here, but the open ocean is always a place of beginnings-a stormy swirling place of biblical creation, where life is made and remade in blood and saltwater. In this revitalized second edition of Joseph L. Bensinger's Man, Ships, and the Sea, the majesty and mystery of these unknown depths are brought singing up to the shimmering surface.

'Magnificent' Robert Macfarlane Winner of the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Our lives depend on shipping but it is a world which is largely hidden from us. In every lonely corner of every sea, through every night, every day, and every imaginable weather, tiny crews of seafarers work the giant ships which keep landed life afloat. These ordinary men live extraordinary lives, subject to dangers and difficulties we can only imagine, from hurricanes and pirates to years of confinement in hazardous, if not hellish, environments. Horatio Clare joins two container ships on their epic voyages across the globe and experiences unforgettable journeys. As the ships cross seas of history and incident, seafarers unfold the stories of their lives, and a beautiful and terrifying portrait of the oceans and their human subjects emerges. Unburdened by the confines and limitations of more structured forms of writing, poetry exposes raw thought processes and establishes finer communication between the reader and the author's inner being. At the same time, poetry with a natural rhythm and beat sings to the very heart and soul. In Man, Ships, and the Sea, the tone of Joseph L. Bensinger's poems varies from whimsical and humorous to tragic, philosophical, and condemning as rhyme and meter capture the ever-shifting moods of man and sea and convey the ramifications of their interaction. This rich, unique, and impassioned collection is poetry as this writer believes it was originally intended—as a form of communication as rousing as the sound of music.Chapter titles are - "The Sea", "Man and the Sea", "Shipping Out", "Pirates", "War", "Of Spirits and Other Things", "Sea Storms I", "Sea Storms II", and "Porting"

Once upon a time there were no ships. Men did not know the meaning of the word; they did not want them; and, for many, many centuries the sea-gulls had the ocean all to themselves. But boats are of very ancient date. Doubtless the first boats must have been constructed by the first men who dwelt on the earth. They consisted, probably-for we are now in the land of conjecture-of stumps of fallen trees, or bundles of rushes, seated astride of which the immediate descendants of our first parents ferried themselves over small lakes and across rivers.Wet feet are not agreeable under any circumstances. We can conceive that prolonged voyages performed in this fashion-say several hundred yards or a mile-rendered those primitive mariners so uncomfortable, that they resolved to improve their condition; and, after much earnest thought, hit upon the plan of fastening several logs together by means of twigs, and thus they formed rafts. As time progressed, and men began to display wisdom in making tools of stone and in the moulding of metal, we can imagine that they soon bethought themselves of flattening the surface of their rafts; and then, finding them unwieldy and difficult to manage, no doubt, they hit upon the idea of hollowing out the logs. Adzes were probably not invented at that time, so they betook themselves to the element of fire-which is at the present day used by savage nations for the same purpose-and burned out the insides of their logs. Thus canoes sprang into being.
