p. ills. (partly col.). maps. 25 cm. Description : Plant parasitic nematodes are one of the least understood agricultural pest problems throughout the world. Science of Plant Nematology has grown rapidly is the last three decades. There is a wide gap between the vast information generated for nematode control and that, which is actually utilised. The present book ``Advances in Nematology'' provides an authoritative review account of many aspects of current interest and progress in the field of Plant Nematology that has been made in the recent past. This book includes 21 articles by eminent nematologist on different aspects of the subject. Information on application of molecular biology in nematology, nematodes as biological model, race status in plant parasitic nematodes and nematode vectors of plant diseases have been reviewed covering all major aspects. Nematode diseases on wheat, rice, tobacco, mint, barley and horticultural crops and their management, specially in context to Indian scenario have been covered. Newer approaches for the management of plant parasitic nematodes including use of VAM fungi, biocontrol agents and integrated nematode management strategies have been included to project out their use on field scale. Articles on role of nematodes in disease complexes with fungi, genetic studies on the resistance of barley, breeding for nematode resistance in forage legumes and nematode pests of economically important crops in India and their managements have been added to the value of the book.Scholars and students of Nematology, researchers and extension workers and plant pathologist will find this book very useful.CONTENTS 1. Microbe Vector Interactions In Vector Borne Diseases written by S. H. Gillespie and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-05-06 with Science categories.

Several billion people are at daily risk of life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as malaria, trypanosomiasis and dengue. This volume describes the way in which the causal pathogens of such diseases interact with the vectors that transmit them, detailing the biological adaptations that enable pathogens to live with their vectors and, in some circumstances, to control them. This knowledge has led to novel preventative strategies in the form of antibiotics and new vaccines which are targeted not at the pathogen itself but at its specific vector.

Vector-borne diseases have increasingly emerged as significant causes of human illnesses worldwide, largely due to environmental changes (deforestation), population movements (migration and travelling), international trades, and buildup of drug resistance. These are presenting major challenge to the efficacy and use of conventional tools for controlling vector-borne diseases. Therefore, use of microbial approach for the control of vector-borne diseases is gaining importance. This book comprehensively reviews vector-borne diseases and their microbial control, emphasizing majorly on ecofriendly ways of microbial control.

Pathogens transmitted among humans, animals, or plants by insects and arthropod vectors have been responsible for significant morbidity and mortality throughout recorded history. Such vector-borne diseases â€" including malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and plague â€" together accounted for more human disease and death in the 17th through early 20th centuries than all other causes combined. Over the past three decades, previously controlled vector-borne diseases have resurged or reemerged in new geographic locations, and several newly identified pathogens and vectors have triggered disease outbreaks in plants and animals, including humans. Domestic and international capabilities to detect, identify, and effectively respond to vector-borne diseases are limited. Few vaccines have been developed against vector-borne pathogens. At the same time, drug resistance has developed in vector-borne pathogens while their vectors are increasingly resistant to insecticide controls. Furthermore, the ranks of scientists trained to conduct research in key fields including medical entomology, vector ecology, and tropical medicine have dwindled, threatening prospects for addressing vector-borne diseases now and in the future. In June 2007, as these circumstances became alarmingly apparent, the Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a workshop to explore the dynamic relationships among host, pathogen(s), vector(s), and ecosystems that characterize vector-borne diseases. Revisiting this topic in September 2014, the Forum organized a workshop to examine trends and patterns in the incidence and prevalence of vector-borne diseases in an increasingly interconnected and ecologically disturbed world, as well as recent developments to meet these dynamic threats. Participants examined the emergence and global movement of vector-borne diseases, research priorities for understanding their biology and ecology, and global preparedness for and progress toward their prevention, control, and mitigation. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

The book ‘Root Biology’ written by experts in the field, covers latest research on cellular, genetic, physiological and ecological developmental facets of root growth as well as the interaction of root with an array of microbes whether for the establishment of symbiosis, increasing plant growth or protecting plant from pathogens/attackers. Plant roots provide an excellent model to study physiological, developmental and metabolic processes at a system level. Root system architecture - an excellent creation of nature, is closely interconnected with the availability of soil nutrients. Several strategies including biotechnological interventions are gaining interest and importance for sustainable food production and enhanced resource acquisition. Such strategies have largely focused on root traits for efficient utilization of soil resources. The biotechnological application of root biology is expected to promote the production of food while maintaining ecologically and economically sustainable production systems. With a fortune of information on technical and experimental aspects useful in the laboratory, this extensive book is a valuable resource for researchers, academician and students in the broad field of microbiology, plant and fungal biology.
