Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Nursing Science - Nursing Management, grade: 78.00, , course: LRPM, language: English, abstract: The human behaviour, whether good, bad, or unusual, exhibits the expression of emotional needs and feelings. It is a form of communication, which is presented in innumerable ways. Nevertheless, these behaviours may at times be considered abnormal when the fall short of social expectations. This is exemplified by the loss of memory, concentration and the inability to reason or make rational decisions are some of the socially and clinically significant behaviours in people with dementia. Restless, disturbing behaviours that hinder the creativity, skills along with the coping resources of the caregiver is commonly known as challenging behaviours. A person diagnosed with dementia may display agitation and aggressive behaviours in reaction to various external and internal stimuli. These features are mirrored on Mr. Holt’s case scenario. The details obtained indicates that the patient was initially fine and considered a model patient, until his behaviours drastically deteriorated and made it difficult for the caregivers to administer standard procedures and treatments. This illustrates the significance of understanding the concepts of challenging behaviours is paramount in behaviour therapies, especially in dementia management.

The enormous human and economic toll of Alzheimer's Disease in societies in which more and more people are living into old age is well-recognized. Scientists and practitioners alike have been working to limit it. Their major focus has been patients in the later stages of the disease, when dementia is fully established. Yet patients in the early stages of cognitive decline, far more numerous, often still living independently with family members, present a bewildering variety of challenges. Bringing together leading authors with diverse expertise, this Handbook offers the first comprehensive overview of approaches to the management of early-stage issues. The authors summarize the important implications of the latest research in their own fields for: * the recognition and formal diagnosis of cognitive problems; * the assessment of specific difficulties in daily functioning; * the formulation of a management plan integrating pharmacological, neuropsychological, behavioral, and cognitive strategies; and * the facilitation and support of caregivers' efforts. All professionals involved in any way with the care of early Alzheimer's patients and their families will find this book an indispensable reference.
