"This empirically-based book provides conceptual knowledge and practical advice to enable clinicians to implement evidence-based methods drawn from learning theory for managing the catastrophic effects of challenging behaviour as an enduring outcome of acquired brain injury (ABI). Based on a conceptual framework of neurobehavioural disability, the book takes a holistic case formulation approach, incorporating functional assessment procedures arising from the operant learning tradition which underpins the design of treatment interventions. It bridges the knowledge gap in uniquely providing a single resource to enable practitioners to implement evidence-based methods to better manage ABI behaviour disorders. The authors, who are leading experts in the field, have described a model of intervention based on a functional analytic approach to understanding behaviour within an operant learning framework. The chapters provide a step-by-step approach to assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation of behaviour support plans, and feature examples for specific challenging behaviours in a variety of different contexts. The book is organised to support use of this model through expert contributions concerning origins of challenging behaviour, assessment methods and formulation, and interventions"--

Neurobehavioural disability (NBD) follows many forms of serious brain injury and is a major constraint on social independence. This book brings together a group of leading academics and practising clinicians to provide an overview of the nature of NBD, considering how it translates into social handicap, and what can be done to address associated problems, through social and behavioural rehabilitation, vocational training and family education. This fully revised edition takes into account advances in the field, exploring the range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural effects of brain damage most commonly associated with damage to the frontal and associated structures of the brain that govern social behaviour. This edition also features increased emphasis on psychological interventions, as well as new chapters on brain imaging, pharmacotherapy and assistive technology for disability. Neurobehavioural Disability and Social Handicap Following Traumatic Brain Injury is essential reading for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and neurologists working in brain injury rehabilitation. The book will also be of interest to relatives of those with brain injury seeking better knowledge to understand neurobehavioural disability, as well as the growing number of therapy care assistants, case managers, support workers, and social workers responsible for the day to day care of brain injured people in the community.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) describes damage to the brain that occurs after birth, caused by traumatic injury such as an accident or fall, or by non-traumatic cause such as substance abuse, stroke, or disease. Today’s medical techniques are improving the survival rate for people of all ages diagnosed with ABI, and current trends in rehabilitation are supporting these individuals returning to live, attend school, and work in their communities. Yet strategies on the best way of providing community participation vary among rehabilitation experts. Because many of survivors of ABI do not and will not return to the status quo of their former lives it is important to examine what constitutes best and promisingpractices in this area. This casebook is the world’s first compilation of evidence-informed programs that foster community participation for people of all ages with brain injury. With thisreview, we elicited and carefully examined existing programmatic efforts that combine emphasis on the individual, the social, and the service systems in a way that captures community participation as a complex process of interactive change in the person-environment relationship – programs that do not divorce ABI survivors from their contexts, and where participation efforts facilitate positive change in the social and political context. We considered community-based programs to be programs where individuals and families actively participate in their own therapy (rehabilitation) and take responsibility for their own health or that of a family/community member. Each case study chapter depicts a program chosen on its extraordinary merits to provide community participation to its clients. The chapters are cowritten by the stakeholder and a researcher, giving a complete perspective of how the program was established and continues to operate, and provides evidence of excellence.

A survey of over 900 trainees at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) in the United Kingdom showed that over three-quarters of psychiatry trainees desired some knowledge and training in the field of neuropsychiatry. Recent years have given rise to a substantial global focus on integrating neurosciences and neuropsychiatry in psychiatric training. Neuropsychiatry forms an important part of the psychiatric curriculum and is examined in theory and in clinical exams. Similarly, neuropsychiatry is also of interest to neurology trainees, and it is increasingly recognised that all neurology trainees should have some knowledge and experience in neuropsychiatry. Despite this growing interest, there is a dearth of neuropsychiatry textbooks specifically geared towards trainees and other clinicians who are not specialist in the field. Part of the Oxford Textbooks in Psychiatry series, the Oxford Textbook of Neuropsychiatry helps to bridge the gap between general psychiatric textbooks and reference texts in neuropsychiatry. Organised into four sections, the book covers the basic knowledge and skills relevant to neuropsychiatry, the various neuropsychiatric conditions, the principles of treatment, and perspectives for neuropsychiatry worldwide. Chapters have been written by international experts who are leaders in their own fields with the view to taking an evidence-based, up-to-date, global perspective on neuropsychiatric problems and treatment. The book is relevant to trainees in psychiatry, neurology, neurorehabilitation and also to various allied professionals in neuroscience and mental health. It covers core knowledge and skills for practice in all psychiatric disciplines including core knowledge for training in neuropsychiatry. The book meets curriculum requirements for various international training programmes and examinations, and serves as an essential training text book for all psychiatric and neurology trainees worldwide.
