Torsten M. Kühlmann and Ramona Heinz developed this guideline in reference to a European project designed to analyze the overall situation of skilled immigrants. They show that the management of a workforce which is comprised of people from diverse cultural backgrounds is a challenge for small and medium-sized companies. In particular, the challenge is not only to find but also to integrate and retain immigrant workers and to use their potential to a full extent. This guideline has been developed in order to meet these challenges. It has a special focus on small to medium-sized organizations and sets out to give an introduction to the topic of “managing cultural diversity” and “integrating highly skilled immigrants.”

Many companies have culturally diverse workforces. This applies to medium- and small-sized businesses as well as to multinational organisations. The existence of a multicultural workforce has important implications for human resource management policies. The Management of a Multicultural Workforce takes a systematic approach to relating organisational features and activities to specific aspects of national culture. Written in an accessible style for students at the MBA and final-year undergraduate level studying cross-cultural organisation and international human resource management, this book will also interest researchers and managers of international firms or those based in one country with a multicultural workforce. The first part of the book examines the significance of culture and the way in which culture influences organisations. Topics cover leadership style, organisational structure, decision making processes, major organisational activities and the significance of societal culture within which these take place. The second part concentrates on the specific issue of human resource management and culture. The emphasis is on the implications of national culture for human resource management practices in uninational and multinational firms of varying size, employing a multicultural workforce. Among the issues discussed are the options open to managers to cope with cultural diversity, the richness of such diversity, and the tensions that arise in such settings. Finally the issue of the transferability of management practices across borders is discussed.

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Hotel Industry / Catering, grade: B, University of Derby, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The topic of diversity has raised significant attention over the past decade (Marx 1999; Kandola et al. 1998; Connerley 2005). Changes in the demographic composition of the workforce in the direction of increasing representation of minority groups – mirrored by changes in other parts of the world – have created the need to understand how ethnically and culturally diverse individuals respond to managerial practices (Warner et al. 2002). Human beings come in all shapes and sizes, colours and forms, but we do not seek to be different, rather we seek to be with our own kind. We are a visually oriented species so perhaps it is somewhat natural that we tend to notice differences. We describe ourselves as Christian, Jew, Democratic, or even as a Manchester football fan. These categories do not refer to natural biological attributes or necessarily to a particular geographical region, but they have an enormous impact on our behaviour (Denton 1997). This report highlights the benefits and problems referring to diversity management and investigates strategies to gain competitive advantage. The hospitality industry is an international and global industry, many companies and organisations are working international and their employees are from many different countries. The hospitality industry is becoming increasingly ‘internationalized’. Indeed, we can say it is ‘globalised’, where a common global experience is taking place.

A new study of how Asian Pacific organizations and private enterprises are expanding into markets beyond their national bases by transforming themselves in multinational and transnational directions. It shows how multicultural relations are fundamental to such shifts. It explains the organizational processes that characterize economic restructuring and the transgression of state borders by organizations seeking economic opportunities. It shows how these ambitions require boundaries to be overcome both inside and outside of organizations. This study also details the trend towards fluidity and complexity of boundaries – both physical and symbolic – within and without of organizations due to the speeding up of key processes. This, however, does not imply that boundaries are disappearing. Organizational change always challenges identities and sets new targets for this very identification. Mergers, acquisitions and strategic alliances all generate new organizational forms and necessitate the redefinition and renegotiation of organizational boundaries. The manifold ways in which organizational boundaries are affected by economic restructuring and at the same time affect social processes within and between organizations, in particular in the context of the booming economies of the Asia Pacific area is the focus of this volume. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Asian Pacific Business Review.

Culture And Project Management written by Omar Zein and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Business & Economics categories.

The cultural diversity within many major projects require those managing them to adapt their project management approach to be in harmony with the preferences and behaviours of stakeholders from these cultures; failure to do so can lead to misunderstandings about the project’s purpose and structure; significant difficulties in implementation and in some cases, to conflict or litigation. Omar Zein's Culture and Project Management explores the cultural impact on projects and their management, providing the reader with an understanding of the main elements of cross-cultural theory within the project context. These include our perception of context, achievement, power and group dynamics; and how we approach ambiguity and time. He then identifies key aspects of project management where cultural sensitivity is essential (for example, planning, risk management, project communication and leadership) and offers a structured plan for developing what he calls 'cultural tuning' within a project environment. The book draws on the author’s research, his professional experience of working on transnational projects and his own background. His review of the different theories alongside examples and stories of their practical application, offers project managers a new and extraordinarily rich perspective into the likely dynamics of their projects. Making appropriate adaptations to standard processes, choosing what, how and through whom you communicate with stakeholders may be signal elements in the success or failure of your projects; Culture and Project Management will show where to start.
