Failing to assess properly can, and sadly still does, cost the construction industry millions of pounds. Much of that could be saved by intelligent use of foresight before the forced excavator even starts work. We certainly have the means, all we need is the will and the professionalism to make it happen. Professor John Burland, FREng, FICE '...the task force wishes to emphasise that we are not inviting UK construction to look at what it does already and do it better: we are asking the industry and government to join with major clients to do it entirely different...' Sir John Egan - Rethinking Construction 1999 Ground related problems and conditions can often adversley affect costs, completion time, profitability, and health and safety issues on a project of any scale. Geotechnical risk can affect all those involved in construction - including the client, designer and the constructor. These guidelines, produced in association with the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, provide best practice guidance on the management of geotechnical risk by all parties concerned, and also explain why such risks occur.

Guidelines For Slope Performance Monitoring written by Robert Sharon and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-01 with Science categories.
Although most mining companies utilise systems for slope monitoring, experience indicates that mining operations continue to be surprised by the occurrence of adverse geotechnical events. A comprehensive and robust performance monitoring system is an essential component of slope management in an open pit mining operation. The development of such a system requires considerable expertise to ensure the monitoring system is effective and reliable. Written by instrumentation experts and geotechnical practitioners, Guidelines for Slope Performance Monitoring is an initiative of the Large Open Pit (LOP) Project and the fifth book in the Guidelines for Open Pit Slope Design series. Its 10 chapters present the process of establishing and operating a slope monitoring system; the fundamentals of pit slope monitoring instrumentation and methods; monitoring system operation; data acquisition, management and analysis; and utilising and communicating monitoring results. The implications of increased automation of mining operations are also discussed, including the future requirements of performance monitoring. Guidelines for Slope Performance Monitoring summarises leading mine industry practice in monitoring system design, implementation, system management, data management and reporting, and provides guidance for engineers, geologists, technicians and others responsible for geotechnical risk management.

Advances In Natural Hazards And Volcanic Risks Shaping A Sustainable Future written by Ana Malheiro and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-20 with Science categories.
This book comprises the selected proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Natural Hazards (NATHAZ’22), Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island, Azores, 2022. The book interests all researchers and practitioners in Earth Sciences, Volcanic Risks, Natural Hazards, Geoethics, Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Terceira is a volcanic island with volcanic systems with caldera (Cinco Picos, Guilherme Moniz, Santa Bárbara and Pico Alto central volcanoes) and an active fissural zone defined by various alignments of small volcanic cones, lava domes and fault zones. The agricultural landscape, the natural and forest reserve, as well as the natural pools make the island a unique place to visit. The historic downtown of Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO world heritage, and several iconic buildings witness the island’s geodynamic history. Natural hazards result from a threat of a naturally occurring event that will have a negative effect on humans. That damaging effect is often called natural disasters. Among the natural hazards and potential disasters to be considered are: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, subsidence, floods, droughts and coastal erosion. In addition, anthropogenic hazards occur as a result of human interaction with the environment. They comprise technological risks due to exposure to hazardous substances in the environment. Natural systems in different frameworks require a comprehensive understanding of climatology, geology, hydrology and volcanic data, processes and dynamics. Thus, it is important to perform hazard and risk assessment studies to accomplish hazard mitigation. In addition, it highlighted the role of variability and climate change in Earth systems. Furthermore, an accurate understanding of the natural systems and interactions with engineering, geodiversity and natural resources is vital to the entire socioeconomic sector. This book is expected to offer an overview of natural hazards in model regions in Europe, America, Asia and the Atlantic islands. It gives new insights into the characterization, assessment, protection, and modelling of geological hazards, volcanic systems, urban areas, coastal zones and engineering approaches by international researchers and professionals. The scientific committee comprises lead geoscientists, natural hazards related practitioners, and academics worldwide. The main topics include: 1. Multi-hazards and risks: sustainable society, disasters and geoethics 2. Natural hazards and assessment: rock falls, landslides, urban planning and management 3. Sustainable Earth systems: hazards and climate change 4. Terceira Island geology and geodiversity: meeting volcanological hazards in the Azores

Guidelines For Open Pit And Waste Dump Closure written by Phil de Graaf and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Guidelines for Open Pit and Waste Dump Closure provides a benchmark reference for geotechnical and hydrogeological professionals, and other closure stakeholders, involved in assessing and implementing the closure of open pits and waste dumps. It defines a state-of-best-practice geotechnical and hydrological pathway that reflects current industry-wide experience; considers the perspectives of the operator, regulator and community; and encompasses closure planning, design, implementation and monitoring. Written by industry experts and practitioners, Guidelines for Open Pit and Waste Dump Closure is the sixth in a series of books developed by the Large Open Pit (LOP) Project. Focused on the technical challenges related to geology, geotechnical engineering, water and geochemistry, it covers the key aspects that relate to closure of open pits and waste dumps, including planning, long-term physical and chemical stability and post mining land use (PMLU). The book also includes workflows that provide clarity on geotechnical and hydrogeological assessments relating to closure planning; definition of pragmatic objectives and measures of success; implementation and monitoring for open pits and waste dumps for closure; and how these may interact with adjacent land uses. Drawing on global lessons learned on mine closure over a period of more than 30 years, this comprehensive guide uses industry experience to set out a road map to closure and potentially relinquishment of open pits and waste dumps. It will be invaluable for mine closure practitioners, corporate planners, mine management, mining engineers and technical staff, mine stakeholders and regulators.
