Drawing upon the authors' wealth of valuable experience in high-risk commercial environments, the work focuses on the need to align the information security process as a whole with the requirements of the modern enterprise, which involves empowering business managers to manage information security-related risk. Throughout, the book places emphasis on the use of simple, pragmatic risk management as a tool for decision-making. The first book to cover the strategic issues of IT security, it helps you to: understand the difference between more theoretical treatments of information security and operational reality; learn how information security risk can be measured and subsequently managed; define and execute an information security strategy design and implement a security architecture; and ensure that limited resources are used optimally. Illustrated by practical examples, this topical volume reveals the current problem areas in IT security deployment and management. Moreover, it offers guidelines for writing scalable and flexible procedures for developing an IT security strategy and monitoring its implementation. You discover an approach for reducing complexity and risk, and find tips for building a successful team and managing communications issues within the organization. This essential resource provides practical insight into contradictions in the current approach to securing enterprise-wide IT infrastructures, recognizes the need to continually challenge dated concepts, demonstrates the necessity of using appropriate risk management techniques, and evaluates whether or not a given risk is acceptable in pursuit of future business opportunities.

Security has been a human concern since the dawn of time. With the rise of the digital society, information security has rapidly grown to an area of serious study and ongoing research. While much research has focused on the technical aspects of computer security, far less attention has been given to the management issues of information risk and the economic concerns facing firms and nations. Managing Information Risk and the Economics of Security provides leading edge thinking on the security issues facing managers, policy makers, and individuals. Many of the chapters of this volume were presented and debated at the 2008 Workshop on the Economics of Information Security (WEIS), hosted by the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Sponsored by Tuck’s Center for Digital Strategies and the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P), the conference brought together over one hundred information security experts, researchers, academics, reporters, corporate executives, government officials, cyber crime investigators and prosecutors. The group represented the global nature of information security with participants from China, Italy, Germany, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the US. This volume would not be possible without the dedicated work Xia Zhao (of Dartmouth College and now the University of North Carolina, Greensboro) who acted as the technical editor.

Managing Information Risks: Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Responses identifies and categorizes risks related to creation, collection, storage, retention, retrieval, disclosure and ownership of information in organizations of all types and sizes. It is intended for risk managers, information governance specialists, compliance officers, attorneys, records managers, archivists, and other decision-makers, managers, and analysts who are responsible for risk management initiatives related to their organizations’ information assets. An opening chapter defines and discusses risk terminology and concepts that are essential for understanding, assessing, and controlling information risk. Subsequent chapters provide detailed explanations of specific threats to an organization’s information assets, an assessment of vulnerabilities that the threats can exploit, and a review of available options to address the threats and their associated vulnerabilities. Applicable laws, regulations, and standards are cited at appropriate points in the text. Each chapter includes extensive endnotes that support specific points and provide suggestions for further reading. While the book is grounded in scholarship, the treatment is practical rather than theoretical. Each chapter focuses on knowledge and recommendations that readers can use to: heighten risk awareness within their organizations, identify threats and their associated consequences, assess vulnerabilities, evaluate risk mitigation options, define risk-related responsibilities, and align information-related initiatives and activities with their organizations’ risk management strategies and policies. Compared to other works, this book deals with a broader range of information risks and draws on ideas from a greater variety of disciplines, including business process management, law, financial analysis, records management, information science, and archival administration. Most books on this topic associate information risk with digital data, information technology, and cyber security. This book covers risks to information of any type in any format, including paper and photographic records as well as digital content.

As the business developed, risk management became a winding and winding road over time. Modigliani and Miller (1958) found that risk management, along with other financial strategies, makes no sense for a firm's value creation process in an environment free of hiring costs, misunderstandings, and taxes. It can even reduce the value of the company as it is rarely free. The main motivation behind the development of risk management as a profession in recent years has been the question of the role of risk management in a value-based business environment, particularly finance. This topic has fueled the growth of risk management as a discipline. Having a reliable risk management systems infrastructure is not only a legal requirement today, but also a necessity for companies that want to gain competitive advantage. This happened due to the development of computing technology and the observation of a number of significant financial turmoil in recent history. However, the debate about the importance of risk management and the role it plays in a financial institution is still open and ongoing. Regrettably, a significant number of businesses continue to consider risk management to be nothing more than a defensive strategy or a reactionary measure adopted in response to regulatory concerns. Non-arbitrage is a fundamental concept in modern financial theory, and it is particularly important to models such as the financial asset pricing model. To improve one's position further, one must be willing to expose themselves to a higher degree of risk. When it comes to managing risks, it's not just a matter of personal inclination; it's also an obligation to ensure that a company is making the most money it can. Because of their position in the market as intermediaries between creditors and investors, banks should be used as a starting off point for a discussion regarding the one-of-a-kind risks and challenges they face in terms of risk management. Banks are one of a kind institutions because of the extraordinary level of service that they provide to customers on both sides of a transaction. This is demonstrated by the length of time that banks have been around and the degree to which the economy is dependent on banks. When it comes to information, risk management, and liquidity, banks frequently serve as essential intermediaries, which allows them to provide businesses with extraordinary value.
