First published in 1992, Managing Library Automation provides a concise, easy-to-read guide to the main factors which librarians and information workers should be aware of when considering computerization. This second edition has been revised and updated with the assistance of Chris Batt to ensure a fresh perspective. The book retains, however, its original brief of not attempting to cover every detail of an extensive topic, but instead, gives the essential facts and indicates significant trends. Historical accounts have been kept to the minimum and no attempt has been made to describe or explain computing techniques except where an understanding of these assists the effective use of systems by librarians. References to further reading are given where appropriate. The book begins by setting library automation within the context of a wider strategy for the use of Information Technology. The importance of careful planning – the first skill of management – is stressed. Subsequent chapters explore the ‘nuts and bolts’ of hardware and software and reveal some of the more significant changes that have now taken place in the five years since the previous edition was published. The ‘human’ aspect of automation is considered throughout the book. Although a more commonplace activity than five years ago, the successful integration of automation into the total library system is still a considerable managerial achievement.

Inherent Strategies in Library Management describes general and specific strategies for libraries based on core library values, and does so through concrete research. Many strategic management books for libraries introduce concepts of business management to the library world, but often neglect traditional library culture and core values. This book reexamines management through the lens of libraries themselves, rather than relying on strategies borrowed from the business world, in an attempt to bring to light the factors and decision-making processes behind how librarians have run their libraries over the past fifty decades. In other words, their decisions can be regarded as inherent management, born naturally from the core foundations, considerations, and operations of libraries. In addition, this book investigates the broad influences of business management theories on libraries, including a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of their use.

The selection of an appropriate integrated library management system for automating libraries has been a challenging task for Indian librarians. Even though a number of indigenous library management softwares were developed, only those compatible with international standards survived. The implementation of integrated library management systems demands a widespread training of librarians for systematic change in their work environment. This book gives a detailed description of library automation, both at Indigenous and global level, from its traditional to modern period. It sheds light on the present picture of automated library system of college and university libraries in India. Apart from highlighting the different modules of various popular library management systems and the user satisfaction with these automated systems, this book also brings into focus the technical expertise of Indian librarians in managing these integrated library management systems. Since an effort has been made to highlight the pros and cons of these systems and the issues faced by the Indian librarians in automating libraries, it is anticipated that this book will serve as a tool for university and college librarians in selecting the integrated library management system that will suit their requirements for effective and efficient automation of their operations and services. Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, printed single-sided, grade: -, Kampala International University - Dar-es-salaam College (computer studdies), course: none, language: English, comment: I undertook this project together with my student and friend mwadawa sadallar. She was very supportive especially in the design of the system. Finally she graduated with a degree of IT. i have a degree in computer science, masters of MIS, and am currently pursuing a PhD of information systems. Am a lecturer of Artificial intelligence, compiler construction, programing and information systems., abstract: For many years, universities & colleges have used file based / manual system to manage library use. Whereas this was quite efficient for some time, due to the expansion of the library and increase in the number of students, the system wastes a lot of time especially when searching for a particular book or resource. In response to this problem, more librarians have been added (employed), and this has escalated the cost of managing the library. This inefficiency, led to the study that was aimed at automating the book keeping function of the library. A study was carried out at Kampala International University Dar salaam Campus and it was discovered that the manual system had inefficiencies ranging from time wastage, high cost of operation in terms of human resources, long search time, data redundancy among others. A computer based library management system was developed using visual studio. The new system allows the user to add books into the system, search for books from the system database, track member information, manage borrowing among others. By automating library operations, the university will enjoy the advantages of using databases and transaction processing systems.
