Responsiveness - conceived of as an organization's ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its stakeholders - has become a crucial, yet underresearched concept in strategic change and organization development. Claus Jacobs develops a concept of enactive responsiveness that transcends the traditional stimulus-response metaphor by re-introducing the dialogical and relational dimensions of responsiveness.

Purpose -- The main goal of this paper is to study the effects of organizational culture on environmental responsiveness capability (ERC) both directly and through the mediation of knowledge management in selected Iranian industrial research organizations (IIRO). Furthermore, the effects of four types of organizational culture on ERC and knowledge management in the target population are compared. Design/methodology/approach -- Relationships between the ERC, knowledge management and organizational culture are considered using survey data through the structural equation modelling (SEM) approach. Five-point Likert questionnaire has been used as a tool for measuring variables. Our sample includes 276 members of 13 selected target organizations whose names are not mentioned due to prior agreement. Findings -- Results show that organizational culture has a positive and significant relationship with ERC, both directly and indirectly through the mediation of knowledge management. Additionally, compared with other types of organizational cultures, innovativeness culture has the highest correlation with ERC both directly and through knowledge management as a mediating variable. Furthermore, cooperativeness culture has a direct significant relationship with ERC, whereas consistency and effectiveness cultures indirectly have significant and positive relationships with ERC through knowledge management. Therefore results of this research provide appropriate evidence that ERC can be affected directly by innovativeness culture and knowledge management. Research limitations/implications -- This research was conducted in IIRO with specific set of societal and cultural attitudes, while different countries have different cultures. So, future research can extend this study to other regions of the world with a different set of attitudes and behaviours. However, the current research provides important insights into effects of knowledge management and organizational culture on the degree of organizational responsiveness. Practical implications -- The findings of this research can assist companies to develop their organizational culture to foster KM processes and enable consistent tracking of environmental changes and undertake timely and appropriate responses. Originality/value -- The advantage of this paper compared to other related research is to study on ERC based on cultural and knowledge-related variables. Hence it can extend the literature of ERC and it can be useful for the managers who are dealing with industrial research company.

Drivers Of Organizational Responsiveness written by Erik de Waard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.

The topic of organizational responsiveness - where organizations need to flexibly react to strategic and operational demands simultaneously - has been under-explored in strategic management research. Our study was initiated to shed more light on this topic, primarily by studying an organization specifically designed to handle crises. By definition, crisis response organizations have to be prepared to react to unpredictable events. Moreover, the volatility of the crisis situation itself requires a high degree of flexibility to get or keep the situation under control. The study hypothesizes modular organizing and organizational sensing to be key drivers of organizational responsiveness. Empirically, we examine the effect these two variables have on the responsiveness of the Netherlands armed forces for crisis response deployment. Findings indicate that modular organizing and organizational sensing are drivers of responsiveness. In addition, our study uncovered the importance of an organization's level of system decomposition to responsiveness. A high degree of system granularity can lead to a predominantly inward focus whereas organizational responsiveness calls for a strong external orientation.

Complexity And The Experience Of Managing In Public Sector Organizations written by Ralph Stacey and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-07 with Business & Economics categories.

A fundamental problem of public sector governance relates to the very way of thinking it reflects; where organization is thought of as a ‘thing’, a system designed to deliver what its designers choose. This volume questions that way of thinking and takes a perspective in which organizations are complex responsive processes of relating between people. Bringing together the work of participants on the Doctor of Management program at Hertfordshire University, this book focuses on the move to marketization and managerialism, paying particular attention to human relationships and group dynamics. The contributors provide narrative accounts of their work addressing questions of management, pressures, accountability, responsiveness and traditional systems perspectives. In considering such questions in terms of their daily experience, they explore how the perspective of complex responsive processes assists them in making sense of experience and developing practice. Including an editors’ commentary which introduces and contextualizes these experiences as well as drawing out key themes for further research, this book will be of value to academics, students and practitioners looking for reflective accounts of real life experiences rather than further prescriptions of what organizational life ought to be.

This book focuses on the challenges of capacity building for flexible work organizations in Asia, and demonstrates how business enterprises practice reactive flexible capacity (in the form of adaptiveness and responsiveness) to cope with changing and uncertain business environments. The book provides examples of how this can be achieved by means of various organizational change initiatives, leadership strategies, re-engineering, innovation in products and processes, the use of information and communication technology, reshaping learning orientations, and more. As these topics are supported by research and case studies situated in different sectors and countries across Asia, the book will provide a useful resource for a broad readership including: management students and researchers, practicing business managers, consultants, and professional institutions.
