Sunnah adalah sabda Nabi Muhammad saw. Kehadiran sunnah dalam kehidupan kita ibarat kita hidup bersama baginda Nabi Muhammad saw. Menghidupkan Sunnah adalah menifestasi dari kecintaan kita kepada Nabi Muhammad saw, dan kecintaan kepada Nabi saw menjamin ma’iyyah kita dengan sang Manusia Sempurna di dalam surga. Sunnah adalah sumber utama dalam syareat Islam, tidak ada satu ajaran pun yang lepas dari Sunnah. Fungsi utama Sunnah di depan Al-Qur’an adalah sebagai pendukung, penjelas bahkan penasakh. Maka, mengabaikan Sunnah atau bahkan tidak mengakui kehujjahan Sunnah adalah gerakan menjauhkan umat dari ajaran utama Islam. Pada masa Rasulullah saw, beliau menjadi rujukan utama dalam segala perkara dan masalah yang ada terutama dalam menjelaskan atau menafsirkan Al-Qur’an. Dan di antara Sahabat ada yang menghabiskan waktunya bersama Nabi saw, dan hadir dalam setiap majlis beliau. Mereka adalah Abu Hurairah, Ali bin Abi Talib, Anas bin Malik, Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Mas’ud, dan lainya. Dan di antara mereka ada yang memiliki urusan dan pekerjaan di luar sehingga tidak bisa hadir setiap waktu, seperti Utsman bin Affan, Umar bin al-Khattab, Abdurrahman bin Auf dan lainnya. Mereka yang tidak bisa hadir setiap waktu ini pun selalu bergantian hadir dan menambal ketertinggalan mereka kepada sahabat yang hadir. Lalu mereka melaporkan dan klarifikasi langsung kepada Rasulullah saw jika merasakan ada yang janggal dalam Sunnah yang mereka dapatkan. Pada zaman pasca Rasulullah wafat, Sahabat sudah banyak yang meninggalkan Madinah dan berpindah ke penjuru negeri yang menjadi penyebaran Islam. Para Sahabat yang memiliki hafalan atau catatan hadis mengajarkan hadis di wilayah masing-masing, inilah yang dikenal dengan sekolah hadis walaupun dalam sekolah hadis ini dipelajari juga ilmu tafsir, fikih, bahasa arab, dan lainnya.
