Furthermore, it describes treatment considerations for geriatric populations, covering all relevant aspects from physiology to treatment planning and patient management in the surgical and prosthetic phases. Dentists worry especially about the burden their aging patients face to maintain their oral health-related quality of life and well-being. Furthermore, older patients require health care technologies that will enable them to maintain their oral health. Over the past few decades, mandibular implant-assisted complete prostheses have attracted the attention of both patients and clinicians, as research on the biological, functional, esthetic, and psychosocial benefits has increased. This book will be of value for all with an interest in the subject..

Implant dentistry has become a standard option for the rehabilitation of fully and partially edentulous patients. With the ever-increasing number of dentists involved in implant dentistry, it is essential to ensure that their treatment methods follow the highest standard. The ITI Treatment Guide series, a compendium of evidence-based implant-therapy techniques in daily practice, is written by renowned clinicians and provides a comprehensive overview of various therapeutic options. Using an illustrated step-by-step approach, the ITI Treatment Guide shows practitioners how to manage different clinical situations, with the emphasis on sound diagnostics, evidence-based treatment concepts, and predictable treatment outcomes. The second volume of the ITI Treatment Guide is devoted to the restoration of partially dentate patients. Central to this volume of the ITI Treatment Guide are loading protocols available to the clinician and the patient and how they relate to various treatment indications, including both single and multiple missing teeth in the posterior and anterior regions of the mouth. Among potential topics for upcoming volumes are implant placement in extraction sockets, loading protocols in edentulous patients, implant therapy in the esthetic zone in extended edentulous spaces, and many more.

The clinical success and longevity of endosteal dental implants as load-bearing abutments are controlled largely by the mechanical setting in which they function. The treatment plan is responsible for the design, number and position of the implants. After achievement of rigid fixation, proper crestal bone contour, gingival health, mechanical stress, and/or strain beyond the physical limits of hard tissues have been suggested as the primary cause of initial bone loss around implants. After successful surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation with a passive prosthesis, such noxious stresses and loads applied to the implant and surrounding tissues result primarily from occlusal contacts. Complications (prosthetic and/or bony support) reported in follow-up studies underline occlusion as a determining factor for success or failure.
