Mango Lady & Other Stories from Hawaii takes the reader on a journey not unlike a long ride across the face of a giant wave, full of unexpected turns and surprises, weaving together memories, fantasies, and personalities that stretch from long ago Hawaii to modern day Vietnam. Through all of them is the connecting spirit of the Islands, its special mana, its people, its surf, bringing times past into the present in a special, intimate way. There is Mango Lady, who lived in Waikiki since childhood, watching her ancient preoccupations become irrelevant in the new bustle of development. There is The Man to Whom Surf Cam, the tale of a magical Urban who never failed to attract surf. There is A November Surfer, an adventure of a senior surfer at remote Rabbit Island. There is Hard Port, an intriguing pulling together of Hawaii and Russia, when a longtime surfer visits Nakhodka in the Russian Far East, the land of his ancestors. Finally, there is the flamboyant and unsettling Captain Aloha, a tale of two old surfing friends from Hawaii and the horrors of the war in Vietnam, a unique portrait of psychology and culture, of friendship and passing time."

These stories are elements of loud thinking triggered by the questions hurled at us by contemporary life. But, it doesn’t preach or recommend any ideology to you. Some of these stories may enthral you, some might lacerate you, some might tickle you and some might provoke you. Some might possibly provide you with new insights. Some could raise critical questions. Some might lead you to agree with the author’s position. Some may provoke you to oppose him. The aim is to spur you into thinking on your own. A reader’s mind is in no way inferior to a writer’s. Instead of looking at life as a mere story, or story as a mere extension of imagination, it projects a vision of life through these stories. It treaded a path of equilibrium—no pomposity of dismissively treating grass-root’s idiom; escaping the grip of pseudo-modernity complicating the written form of the language with the ostensible purpose of importing subtlety. Maalan V. Narayanan is an eminent award winning writer bilingual (Tamil and English) writer, bestowed with various coveted awards including Lee Kong Chian Research Fellowship of Singapore and ‘Krititva Samagra Samman’ (award for wholesomeness in creativity) of Bharaiya Basha Parishad. He has served in Senates of various Universities and committees of National Book Trust and Sahitya Akademi Dr.K.S.Subramanian, a former Director of Asian Development Bank, is an eminent translator who has won many awards for his translations. He holds a Ph.D from the University of the Philippines. He has translated more than 30 Tamil literary works of different genre into English and his translations have beem published by many leading reputed publishers of India.

This particular book was inspired by my father. He was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii. As a child, I really did spend many summers going to Hawaii with my grandmother to visit family there. My uncle had a huge mango tree in his backyard, and he would let me pick them just as the girl in the story does. I wanted a children's book that brought out fantasy and imagination for children, as well as taught them something. I have a love for animals and nature, and so I decided to combine trees and animals. My intention is to create a series that will always relate to personal experiences with a different kind of tree and the animals that inhabit them. I was raised in the central coast of California, and so my next book will be about oak trees as our property had many of them as did the surrounding area. I am still contemplating which animal I will choose. Lani's character is inspired by me as a child hanging out in Hawaii. She is a dreamer with a great imagination as I hope all children have. She is also very curious and has a thirst for knowledge, again a hope I want to inspire in children. The bat family characters all have very different character traits, but as a family unit, I think children will find them fun and easy to relate to. The message is simple. Use your imagination, dreaming is a good thing, be curious, and go learn from it, and it is OK that things in life are not always permanent. It just might mean there is something better around the corner, so don't stop looking. Mahalo.

'Sacrilegious to say it but Elizabeth Luard even beats Elizabeth David. Exquisite writing and wonderful food, and funny too' Prue Leith 'Elisabeth Luard proves that no matter where you are, there is food to be gathered, or hunted, or found. Squirrel Pie is a beautifully written tribute to food that has all but vanished from our everyday lives' Alice Waters Elisabeth Luard, one of the food world's most entertaining and evocative writers, has travelled extensively throughout her life, meeting fascinating people, observing different cultures and uncovering extraordinary ingredients in unusual places. In this enchanting food memoir, she shares tales and dishes gathered from her global ramblings. With refreshing honesty and warmth, she recounts anecdotes of the many places she has visited: scouring for snails in Crete, sampling exotic spices in Ethiopia and tasting pampered oysters in Tasmania. She describes encounters with a cellarer-in-chief and a mushroom-king, and explains why stress is good news for fruit and vegetables, and how to spot a truffle lurking under an oak tree. Divided into four landscapes – rivers, islands, deserts and forests – Elisabeth's stories are coupled with more than fifty authentic recipes, each one a reflection of its unique place of origin, including Boston bean-pot, Hawaiian poke, Cretan bouboutie, mung-bean roti, roasted buttered coffee beans, Anzac biscuits and Sardinian lemon macaroons. Illustrated with Elisabeth's own sketches, Squirrel Pie will appeal to anyone with a taste for travel, and an affinity for that most universal of languages, food.

Language Of The Geckos written by Gary Pak and has been published by UBS Publishers' Distributors this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Fiction categories.

"Pak's narrative voice shifts deftly between his actors, shading the nuanced voices and interior lives of housewives, mechanics, cabdrivers, aging hippies, and bargirls. The worlds of Pak's Hawaiians, Asian locals, and the haoles sometimes intersect and collide and other times remain parallel, but each world is haunted by the past. Whether Pak evokes shadows of World War II, the Vietnam War, the radical sixties, or the military dictatorship of Chun Doo Hwan in Korea, the larger historical context looms ominously in the background as wounded memories of characters in despair."--Jacket.
