The Mango is one of the oldest cultivated fruit crops, having been grown in India for at least 4000 years. Mango is the most important fruit crop of Asia and its annual production is exceeded worldwide only by Musa, citrus, grapes and apples. The last decade has seen a rapid growth of mango production, mainly due to expansion into new growing regions but also to the adoption of modern field practices and cultivars. A wide range of fresh, mango cultivars are now consumed worldwide and are available year round. The Mango: Botany, Production and Uses, published in 1997, represented the first comprehensive examination of all aspects of modern mango production and research. Developing upon the successful first edition, this book incorporates a discussion of significant advances in mango research that have contributed to improved production and will be highly relevant for researchers and growers alike.

Principal Aspects of the Book: - It presents the study of the variability of mango quality at the harvest stage, during post-harvest storage and due to cultivar difference. - It presents the study of the potential of four different cameras (monochrome, color, ultra-violet and near-infra-red) in a computer vision system for quality evaluation of a mango. - The development of an algorithm for the extraction of various morphological features of a mango fruit using each camera setup. - The development of algorithms for the detection of the defects on the surface of a mango fruit using a monochrome and color (RGB) camera computer vision system. - The development of an algorithm for bruise detection just below the peel of a mango fruit using near infra-red camera-based computer vision system. - The investigation of various types of defects responsible for the loss of quality of a mango and its market value using UV camera-based computer vision system. - Mathematical models were developed for predicting the mass and volume of the fruit using various morphological features, geometrical characteristics and derivative parameters as the independent variables

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the oldest and choicest tropical fruits of the world and is rightly designated as "King of fruits." It is the third widely produced fruit crop of the tropics after banana and citrus and occupying relatively the same position in the tropics as the apple in Europe and North America. Mango is believed to be indigenous to the Indian sub-continent. It is under cultivation in India for more than 4000 years and hence conspicuous bonds have been formed between the fruit and cultural history of some countries like India. The spray of Calcium Chloride extends the shelf life due to the increased firmness and retarded ethylene production rates in CaCl2 treated fruits and improves the physico-chemical properties of mango fruit. This book may be useful for Students, Lecturers, Researchers and mango growers worldwide.

Mango is one of the important fruits in the country. Yield per hectare has been increasing in the '70s at an average of 15,2% per annum. In 1979, the national average mango yield was 9,3 t (metric tonnes) per hectare. Mango is for domestic consumption and for export. Per capita consumption in the country. Exportation of fresh mangoes takes only a small percentage of the total national production. The major market is Hong Kong. Mango trade with Japan has not expanded due to stiff export requirements. Research thrusts in mango are geared towards the improvement of the export market. Large and blemish-free fruits are required by exporting countries especially Japan, but these could not be generally produced under the country's present production schemes. The packges of technology in production and processing should be developed and improved. Research advances in flower induction, pest control, and postharvest handling made possible the present high average yield. The use of potassium nitrate as a flower inducer is a breakthrough in Philippine mango fruit production. The present preharvest and postharvest treatment that control pests such as fruit fly, anthracnose, and fruit rotting have considerably improved production. However ,there are aspects of mango production that need to be developed and improved. A rootstock that could produce shorter trees to facilitate cultural operations and resistant to typhoons is desired. To maixmize land utilization, the system and distances of planting as well as intercropping should be evaluated. Although the use of flower induction is sucessful; potassium nitrate is a restricted chemical and effective only on 'Carabao' and 'Pico' varieties. There is a need to study other nonrestricted and nonselective chemicals and their long term effects. Improvements are needed in pest control, postharvest handling, and utilization of mango.
