La sinistra si è sempre presentata, nella storia, come l’unica erede legittima dell’illuminismo, come il «partito del progresso, della scienza, della ragione» e, a questo titolo, come l’avanguardia più decisa di tutte le modernizzazioni concepibili, di carattere tecnologico, politico o morale. La sensibilità socialista, invece, ha origini diverse e più complesse. Si forma solo all’inizio del XIX secolo a partire dalle molteplici lotte degli operai inglesi, mossi dal desiderio di proteggere – contro gli effetti disumanizzanti del liberalismo industriale – un certo numero di forme di esistenza comunitaria. Il socialismo operaio si configura sin dal principio come un rapporto eminentemente critico verso il côté illuminista e soprattutto verso il suo individualismo devastante, e rappresenta la traduzione in idee filosofiche delle prime proteste popolari contro i disastrosi effetti, sugli uomini e sulla natura, dell'industrializzazione liberale. Interprete originale del pensiero di Marx, in quest’opera Preve ne enfatizza gli elementi di continuità con il pensiero greco e con l’idealismo classico tedesco, rintracciando nella storia della filosofia occidentale un filone di lungo periodo caratterizzato dalla ricerca di pratiche di ricomposizione comunitaria, a fronte del disfacimento individualistico e crematistico del mondo.

Oggi la cultura di sinistra, ridotta quasi esclusivamente a forme più o meno radicali di politically correct, non rappresenta altro che la faccia presentabile della dominante «destra del denaro». Essa riveste di un multicolore manto di moralità la plumbea assenza di scrupoli della seconda, svolgendo così una funzione propriamente ideologica. Il Sessantotto ne è stato il mito di fondazione, generando una mentalità che «promuove un mondo simbolico in cui tutte le discriminazioni, all’infuori di quella derivante dagli spaventosi differenziali di potere, consumo e reddito, vengono demonizzate». Non parliamo del ’68 in quanto tale, poiché in quel frangente storico si intrecciarono istanze sociali variegate, complesse e anche contraddittorie. Parliamo invece di un senso comune che si è rivelato estremamente congeniale a favorire l’ingresso del capitalismo nella sua fase assoluta. A detta di Costanzo Preve, quella di Adorno è stata la filosofia più estranea al Sessantotto che si potesse concepire. Egli è stato infatti uno dei più acuti interpreti del filo rosso che unisce il liberismo economico “di destra” e il liberalismo dei costumi “di sinistra”, che al di là delle apparenze non costituiscono due alternative inconciliabili, ma due facce della stessa medaglia, la logica sistemica del capitalismo speculativo.

Al governo dei Paesi occidentali si alternano partiti di destra e di sinistra, eppure nulla sembra cambiare davvero per il popolo e le sue istanze. È ciò che Diego Fusaro chiama alternanza senza alternativa, con le fazioni della vecchia politica «egualmente sussunte sotto l'ordine neoliberale». Quelli che un tempo erano schieramenti in lotta per due opposte visioni del mondo e dell'agire politico sono ormai le fac-ce intercambiabili della stessa medaglia: l'agenda turbocapitalista. La sinistra ha abdicato al suo ruolo di strumento di emancipazione globale; e, nei fatti, la destra cosiddetta sovranista non si cura minimamente del popolo sovrano. Siamo così passati dalla democrazia - il governo del popolo, nella dialettica delle sue articolazioni - alla demofobia: la paura del popolo da parte di chi gestisce monoliticamente il potere. Oggi la «destra bluette» del denaro e la «sinistra fucsia» del costume non sono altro che le due ali dell'aquila neoliberale, parti organiche al medesimo sistema, che «si riproduce economicamente a destra, politicamente al centro e culturalmente a sinistra». Così il partito unico del capitale e della sua omogeneità bipolare egemonizza lo spazio politico, e «dall'alto vola rapacemente verso il basso, aggredendo ceti medi e classi lavoratrici, popoli e nazioni». Ci troviamo insomma dinanzi a una «rivoluzione spaziale» della filosofia politica, che impone la teorizzazione di una nuova geografia e di una rinnovata topografia, in cui l'asse interpretativo più utile e appropriato è appunto quello dell'opposizione alto-basso: tra le élite finanziarie globaliste e il popolo. Comprendere la natura profonda di tale scenario è il primo passo per riportare al centro dell'agire sociale e politico il benessere dei popoli-nazioni, la loro sovranità e identità. In perfetto stile fusariano, questo saggio denso, lucido e provocatorio mira a porre le basi per un nuovo dibattito e a stimolare una visione critica del reale, spiegandoci come ritrovare la bussola per navigare nei marosi della politica, non solo nostrana.

Though much has been written about connections between early modern utopia and nascent European imperialism, Nina Chordas brings a fresh perspective to the topic by exploring it through some of the sub-genres that comprise early modern utopia, identifying and discussing each specific form in the cultural and historical contexts that render it suitable for the creation and promulgation of utopian programs, whether imaginary or intended for actual implementation. This study transforms scholarly understanding of early modern utopia by first complicating our notion of it as a single genre, and secondly by fusing our paradoxically fragmented view of it as alternately a literary or social phenomenon. Her analysis shows early modern utopia to be not a single genre, but rather a conglomeration of many forms or sub-genres, including travel writing, ethnography, dialogue, pastoral, and the sermon, each with its own relationship to nascent imperialism. These sub-genres bring to utopian writing a variety of discourses - anthropological, theological, philosophical, legal, and more - not usually considered fictional; presented in a humanist guise, these discourses lend to early modern utopia an authority that serves to counteract the general contemporary distrust of fiction. Chordas shows how early modern utopia, in conjunction with the authoritative forms of its sub-genres, is not only able to impose its fictions upon the material world but in doing so contributes to the imperialistic agendas of its day. This volume contains a bibliographical essay as well as a chronology of utopian publications and projects, in Europe and the New World.

In a work centred on Marx's harsh biography of Simón Bolívar, José Aricó examines why Latin America was apparently 'excluded' from Marx's thought, challenging the allegation that this expressed some 'Eurocentric' prejudice. Aricó shows how the German thinker's hostility towards the Bonapartism and authoritarianism he identified in the Liberator coloured his attitude towards the continent and the significance of its independence-processes. Whilst criticising Marx's misreading of Latin-American realities, Aricó demonstrates contemporaneous, countervailing tendencies in Marx's thought, including his appraisal of the revolutionary potentialities of other 'peripheral' extra-European societies. As such, Aricó convincingly argues that Marx's work was not a dogma of linear 'progress', but a living, contradictory body of thought constantly in development.
