Dalit Representation In Popular Hindi Cinema written by Vishal Chauhan and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-31 with Performing Arts categories.
This book explores the dynamics of caste in Bollywood and popular Hindi cinema through an examination of the representation of Dalits since the 1930s. Drawing on critical textual analysis and historical analyses of a number of key films, the author argues that popular Hindi cinema corroborates in the construction, naturalisation, and dissemination of Dalit stereotypes in line with the dominant culture, on the one hand, and ignores the Dalit history of struggle against caste discrimination, on the other hand. The book maps the evolution of Dalit representation from the 1930s to the 2000s. In doing so, it addresses the continuity and shifts in their portrayals and explores the linkages between the cinematic representation of Dalits and real- world power structures. This book will be of interest to scholars and students working in film studies, film history, cultural politics, sociology, and cultural studies.

Growing up in the late 19th century, Laura Wheeler Waring didn't see any artists who looked like her. She didn't see any paintings of people who looked like her, either. As a young woman studying art in Paris, she found inspiration in the works of Matisse and Gaugin to paint the people she knew best. Back in Philadelphia, the Harmon Foundation commissioned her to paint portraits of accomplished African-Americans. Her portraits still hang in Washington DC's National Portrait Gallery, where children of all skin tones can admire the beautiful shades of brown she captured.

“Faith Over Fear is an outcome of the attempt to answer several such questions that occur during the course of everyday lives of most of the people – “Am I doing the right thing?”, “is this where I want to be?”, “can I really do this ?”, “should I take this path?" so on and so forth; questions that don’t seem to have a very clear answer at the outset, but almost always become clearer as we dwell on them. But the process off dwelling on the questions, pondering the possibilities, is fraught with several other related emotional attributes that come to the fore – Fear, Insecurity, Negativity, Courage, Commitment, Happiness, Contentment, Positivity and above all Faith. The book dwells at length on each of these attributes, taking inspiration from some well-known examples of people who rose above fears and insecurities, overcame negativity, and displayed the courage to chase the path of faith over fears, identifying and pursuing success, displaying stellar commitment towards their intent, and pursued their chosen paths even in the face of great adversities. Light-hearted and easy to read, the book touches individually on each of the attributes of success, and is aimed at taking the reader on a short journey through the course that the thoughts take and how to interpret and manage the manifestation effectively.

During a time when taking a trip across the nation could be dangerous for Black Americans, one man crafted a guide that changed the lives of millions. In the late 1930s when segregation was legal and Black Americans couldn't visit every establishment or travel everywhere they wanted to safely, a New Yorker named Victor Hugo Green decided to do something about it. Green wrote and published a guide that listed places where his fellow Black Americans could be safe in New York City. The guide sold like hot cakes! Soon customers started asking Green to make a guide to help them travel and vacation safely across the nation too. With the help of his mail carrier co-workers and the African American business community, Green's guide allowed millions of African Americans to travel safely and enjoy traveling across the nation. In the first picture book about the creation and distribution of The Green Book, author Keila Dawson and illustrator Alleanna Harris tell the story of the man behind it and how this travel guide opened the road for a safer, more equitable America.
