The Spanish civil war exploded when the core of the Spanish character, forged over centuries, was assailed by the actions of new but misguided ideas in conflict with the Spanish spirit. Manolo is a living ghost of childhood lost, brought about by the horror of the war, that left the Country scarred for many decades. Wounds, which will never quite heal. It is through his eyes, the eyes of a ten-year-old child, that the consequences of such tragic conflict are viewed. Together with his friends, two boys and a girl of the same age, he transports us to the days, back in history, when death was around the corner and was accepted as the norm; when threats to innocent lives easily became a quick step to execution for the most trivial reasons; when food was scarce to the point of starvation. And amidst this turmoil Manolo survived as a refugee of adversity.

What you are about to read is what I remember from my childhood set against the backcloth of the Spanish Civil War. I was slightly over seven years old at the time. I would have preferred to set my childhood on a pallet of beautiful colors, but as a mere mortal, I could not choose where to be then. Destiny did that for me. This book is neither political nor religious. I am neither. It is simply a recollection of things I saw, heard, and felt. It may sound paradoxical, but because of this, my feelings have always been numb. Whether this is due to my psychological makeup or to the fact that I went through adversity at a very young age, I know not. I accept life as it is, the everyday merry-go-round of sweetness and bitterness. Circumstances taught me to expect the unexpected and forged the need for survival at all costs. Although, in my darker moments, I wondered if that need should even be considered. The events I relate happened mainly in Madrid, where I was born, where my brothers and sisters were born, and where my parents worked hard for a more rewarding life. Madrid where, during three years of agony and hope, the revolution changed my life forever.

Amid the shadows of war, one family faces an impossible choice that will change their lives forever. From bestseller Mario Escobar comes a 20th-century historical novel of sacrifice and resilience inspired by Spain’s famed Children of Morelia and the true events that shaped their lives. Madrid, 1934. Though the Spanish Civil War has not yet begun, the streets of Madrid have become dangerous for thirteen-year-old Marco Alcalde and his two younger sisters. Marco’s parents align themselves against the new fascist regime, unaware that their choice will endanger the entire family—nor do they predict the violence that is to come. In a desperate bid for safety, the Alcaldes join many other Spanish families in making an impossible choice to send their unaccompanied children across the ocean to the city of Morelia, Mexico—a place they’ve never seen or imagined, but whose government promises their children protection. Young Marco promises to look after his sisters in Mexico until their family can be reunited in Spain, but a harrowing journey ensues. As the growing children work to care for themselves and each other, they feel their sense of home, family, and identity slipping further and further away. As their memories of Spain fade, they begin to wonder if they will ever see their parents again or the glittering streets of the home they once loved. Based upon the true stories of the Children of Morelia, Mario Escobar’s Remember Me—now available for the first time in English—paints a poignant portrait of an immigrant family’s sacrificial love and endurance, detailing just how far we go for those we love. “Luminous and beautifully researched, Remember Me is a study of displacement, belonging, compassion, and forged family amid a heart- wrenching escape from the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War. Fans of Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Chanel Cleeton, and Lisa Wingate will be mesmerized.” —Rachel McMillan, author of The London Restoration Perfect for book clubs: Includes discussion questions, research notes from the author, and a historical timeline Based on real historical events: Full-length, 90,000-word historical novel based on the true stories of the Children of Morelia Researched and written by a subject-matter expert: Mario Escobar has a master's degree in modern history and lives in Madrid

This is an art book of over five dozen inspiring sculptures by a master of human anatomy. It is also a biography and a record of the turbulent history through which this innovative modern artist lived. Manolo Pascual suffers two successive exiles: after Spanish dictator Franco's victory in 1939, and after dictator Trujillo's disapproval in 1951. Both deeply affect his life and help to shape his art.Following 18 years of art awards and exhibits in Europe, he escapes Spain as a refugee army officer, and joins other artist and intellectual exiles in Trujillo's Dominican Republic. Three years later, he becomes the first director of the National School of Fine Arts, where he and other Spanish Civil War refugees help to create a new generation of Dominican artists and new directions in Latin American art. Editor and daughter Ariadne recounts here her own nine-year exile as a child refugee in Stalin's Soviet Union, and her father's move to New York to teach for 29 years at The New School for Social Research. Co-Editor Fernando Urena Rib and six other art experts present articles describing the evolution of Pascual's ground-breaking modern sculpture, and the critical acclaim that follows.Entertaining anecdotes and varied autobiographical snapshots enliven the life story of a courageous and remarkable man.
