El análisis de estabilidad de taludes surge en múltiples problemas ingenieriles relacionados con el diseño y construcción de presas, terraplenes, bordos y canales; estas obras son masas térreas construidas por el ser humano, en las que se salvan niveles diferentes mediante una superficie inclinada, generando lo que reconocemos como un talud. También se producen taludes al realizar cortes en laderas o al excavar para desplantar una cimentación. Así mismo, es tema de análisis la estabilidad de laderas, que son taludes naturales. Este capítulo es una guía para el análisis de estabilidad de taludes, describiendo paso a paso los métodos más utilizados en la ingeniería práctica; éstos se basan en la búsqueda del mecanismo de falla más probable, al que se asocia el factor de seguridad mínimo del talud; éste en general es el cociente entre las fuerzas o momentos resistentes, entre las fuerzas o momentos motores o actuantes en un talud, respectivamente. Tal búsqueda impone procesos repetitivos y tediosos, para los que los paquetes computacionales especializados están precisamente programados. Estas herramientas de cómputo se describen aquí, distinguiéndoseles no sólo sus virtudes, sino también sus limitaciones. Se reconocen los análisis, con condiciones drenadas o no-drenadas de la vida de un talud, y con ello, los parámetros de resistencia cortante correspondientes; además, se mencionan algunos ejemplos de valores típicos aceptables de factores de seguridad.Adicionalmente, se exponen los métodos de análisis orientados a establecer no sólo las condiciones extremas de estabilidad, sino también para estimar el campo de deformaciones, y con ello, los desplazamientos del talud.Se repasan algunas de las causas más recurrentes que ocasionan la inestabilidad de taludes y laderas, y se describen técnicas de remediación para tales casos. Finalmente, como Ayudas de Diseño se exponen algunos ejemplos tanto con procedimientos analíticos detallados paso a paso, como con procedimientos de cómputo.
