El volumen aborda el español tal como se asentó y desarrolló en territorios del continente americano con la conquista y colonización en todo su espectro variacional. Incluye, por lo tanto, una noción implícita de los 18 Estados soberanos, que tienen el castellano como lengua oficial con sus hablas cultas y populares, si bien considera, al mismo tiempo, las lenguas mixtas o lexicalizadas por el castellano, p. ej. la media lengua o los criollos hispánicos, así como las variedades migradas o formadas por migración, p. ej. el isleño o el cocoliche. Al titular el manual El español en América, se acentúa, por un lado, la noción de la gran diversidad y riqueza de las variedades hispanoamericanas y, por el otro, rechaza la idea de que existan variedades nacionales. Así, enfatiza con su aproximación, en gran parte transnacional, los resultados de los múltiples contactos y desarrollos lingüísticos autónomos en el continente, desde Tierra del Fuego hasta Alaska, a partir de planteamientos conceptuales asequibles y con un anclaje histórico bien fundado. El volumen realiza un recorrido por la vasta geografía actual del español en tierras americanas al incluir fenómenos como el desplazamiento migratorio, la urbanización, el influjo de los medios de comunicación, las actividades de estandarización y elaboración, el desarrollo terminológico o la globalización. De esta manera, intenta brindar, con artículos de variada extensión, una perspectiva amplia y panamericana, así como un acercamiento crítico y transdisciplinario a la temática que atañe. Pretende ser –tanto para la comunidad científica como para los estudiantes universitarios– un compendio de consulta, que ofrece una visión de conjunto exhaustiva y accesible.
