Since many of the species are small, or even minute, and inconspicuous, and since the order as a whole has not received the at tention from collectors and students of entomology that other and more attractive groups have, it is very certain that many more await discovery. A very reasonable es timate would place the entire number of species of flies at present in existence at more than eighty thousand. From North America the recent catalogue of Aldrich gives a list of about eight thousand species, distributed in more than a thousand genera. The subject is a wide one and replete with interest. From the use that has been made of that work by entomological students, he has been encouraged to believe that the labor of its preparation was not in vain. The extra ordinary activity in the investigation of our dipterological fauna within the past few years has, however, largely destroy edits usefulness, and it is hoped that this new edition, or rather this new work, will prove as serviceable as has been the former one. In the present work there has been an at tempt to include all the genera now known from north of South America. Ivhile the Central and West Indian faunas are preeminently of the South American type, there are doubt less many forms occurring in the southern states that are at present known only from more southern regions. Excerpt from Synopsis of the Families and Genera of North American Diptera, Exclusive of the Genera of the Nematocera and Muscidae With Bibliography and New Species, 1878-88 Tm; writer has, during the past five years, published in different periodicals various synoptic tables of the families and genera of North American Diptera. The intention was, at first, to reprint these with revisions, that they might be more accessible to those interested in this order of insects. In order to make, it is trusted, the tables of more service, those of other families have been added, either as compiled or reproduced from standard authorities, or pre pared from the examination of specimens in the author's collection. It will be understood, however, that, in not a few families, the pres ent condition of American dipterology does not admit of the prepa ration of synopses free from error; the writer's acquaintance, too, with not a few families, has been less complete than with others, and it is very true that only he who has made a critical study of abundant material is competent to compile such tables with much success. For this reason, the tables of genera in the Nematocerous and Muscid families have been omitted. It may be mentioned that very nearly all the genera defined in the present work have been examined by the writer, though not all with the same degree, of critical study. The faunal limits embraced are those north of Mexico; and whenever extralimital forms are introduced they will be found preceded by a 0.
