Although previously thought to be merely passive structural components, membrane lipids have recently been found to be actively involved in cellular transport and signal transduction processes. Clear protocols for the study of membrane lipid properties, cellular transport or signal transduction are presented in this manual. Following a short introduction to membrane lipids, techniques for the isolation and extraction of membrane fractions, the analysis of the lipid composition, lipid turnover, and the involvement in signal transduction as well as the preparation of liposomes are described.

In bone surgery it is essential to compress fractures interfragmentarily in order to make them resistant to the tensile force of muscles and the force resulting from acceleration and deceleration. This can be best achieved by the use of cable tension bands as a traction mechanism. The cable tension band is - in terms of stability of fractures - far superior to the conventional rigid cerclage wire which has been widely used in osteosynthesis for over 100 years. The author explains the biomechanics of the tension band in detail. Theoretical findings are confirmed by clinical test results. All osteosynthetic techniques which can be carried out with cables are described giving details of operation instructions. Errors and risks are always pointed out. A reference book and operative manual at a time.

A general review of lipid bilayer structure and dynamics is given, including such current topics as the hydration of lipid bilayers, the superstructural behaviour of bilayers at different states of hydration and external conditions, the role and behaviour of lipid bilayers on fusion and rupture and the interaction of lipid bilayers with small organic molecules and additives and of protein lipid bilayer interactions. In addition, recent research on lipid interaction with proteins and other molecules in monolayers is reviewed, and the use of highly aligned samples under biologically relevant conditions and the benefits derived from such preparations are addressed. Finally, the latest approach in simulation of impurities within a lipid bilayer is introduced. This book will be a comprehensive review of the current state of biologically relevant model membrane systems which will become an indispensible reference for the "working biophysicist".
