The sustainable development and expansion of aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region has the potential to bolster food security and to deliver socioeconomic benefits but it is highly dependent on the availability of suitable space. In this regard, allocated zones for aquaculture (AZAs) are considered essential tools for aquaculture in the region as they result from a zoning process based on marine spatial planning. In this context, the use of geographic analysis tools capable of improving the integration of this activity in coastal zones within the spatial planning process offers great advantages. This practical manual aims to facilitate the understanding and use of geographic information system (GIS) for the planning and management of aquaculture in Mediterranean and Black Sea countries. Designed as a step-by-step guide for all stakeholders within the aquaculture sector, it leads readers through the process of using a GIS for aquaculture spatial planning including AZA identification, from foundational GIS knowledge to advanced techniques. It introduces the concept of AZAs within marine spatial planning and highlights the utility of GIS tools for spatial planning, delving into GIS fundamentals, components and software. The manual concludes with a series of recommendations for the correct use of GIS for spatial analysis and sustainable aquaculture development.

Advances In Geographic Information Systems And Remote Sensing For Fisheries And Aquaculture written by Geoffery J. Meaden and has been published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with BUSINESS & ECONOMICS categories.

The publication is an easy-to-understand publication that emphasizes the fundamental skills and processes associated with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing. The first chapter initially puts the array of spatially related problems into perspective and discusses the earlier applications of GIS and remote sensing. Chapters, 2, 3 and 4 outline what are considered to be the basics on which GIS can function, i.e. hardware and software; spatial data; and how GIS systems themselves are best implemented. Chapter 5 looks at preparing the data for GIS use and Chapter 6 explores what remote sensing consists of and the main purposes for its use. Chapter 7 discusses the functional tools and techniques offered by typical GIS software packages. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 examine respectively, the current issues and status, including extensive case studies, of the application of GIS and remote sensing to aquaculture, to inland fisheries and to marine fisheries.

This review provides an appraisal of existing, state-of-the-art fish identification (ID) tools (including some in the initial stages of their development) and shows their potential for providing the right solution in different real-life situations. The ID tools reviewed are: Use of scientific experts (taxonomists) and folk local experts, taxonomic reference collections, image recognition systems, field guides based on dichotomous keys; interactive electronic keys (e.g. IPOFIS), morphometrics (e.g. IPez), scale and otolith morphology, genetic methods (Single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs] and Barcode [BOL]) and Hydroacoustics. The review is based on the results and recommendations of the workshop "Fish Identification Tools for Fishery Biodiversity and Fisheries Assessments," convened by FAO FishFinder and the University of Vigo and held in Vigo, Spain, from 11 to 13 October 2011. It is expected that it will help fisheries managers, environmental administrators and other end users to select the best available species identification tools for their purposes.--
