This book investigates the representation of the Axis War – the wars of aggression that Fascist Italy fought in North Africa, Greece, the Soviet Union, and the Balkans, from 1940 to 1943 – in three decades of Italian literature. Building on an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology, which combines memory studies, historiography, thematic criticism, and narratology, this book explores the main topoi, themes, and masterplots of an extensive corpus of novels and memoirs to assess the contribution of literature to the reshaping of Italian memory and identity after the end of Fascism. By exploring the influence that public memory exercises on literary depictions and, in return, the contribution of literary texts to the formation and dissemination of a discourse about the past, the book examines to what extent Italian literature helped readers form an ethical awareness of the crimes committed by members of their national community during World War II.

Il giorno del funerale di Carlo Emilio Gadda, un piccolo gruppo di amici, tra i quali Pietro Citati, Gianfranco Contini e i suoi due editori – Giulio Einaudi e Livio Garzanti – imbucò qualche moneta nella gettoniera a tempo per illuminare il ciclo caravaggesco di san Matteo, conservato a Roma nella Cappella Contarelli in San Luigi dei Francesi. Un omaggio che l’autore della Cognizione del dolore senz’altro avrebbe apprezzato. Nei suoi anni romani Gadda non mancava, infatti, una quasi quotidiana visita alla Cappella dove poteva ammirare – gigantesco, immobile, e muto – il suo amatissimo idolo lombardo, punto di arrivo di un’«idolatria» che lo scrittore coltivava dagli anni venti, quando già affermava che la contemplazione delle opere di Caravaggio era capace di procurargli una «vera ebbrezza mista di gratitudine». Ma la predilezione gaddiana per le arti figurative non si esaurisce a Caravaggio: Raffaello, Michelangelo, Tiziano sono gli indicatori di una polarità figurativa, gli estremi di una galleria interiore che struttura da cima a fondo la sua opera, dalle prime prove del Racconto italiano fino al Pasticciaccio. Manuela Marchesini esplora una zona poco conosciuta e piena di sorprese dell’opera di Gadda. Ragionare della sua «galleria figurativa» significa d’altronde addentrarsi nel gioco di specchi caratteristico del modo di procedere nell’elaborazione della sua prosa. La scrittura dell’Ingegnere è innanzi tutto intrinsecamente visiva – nota la sua ammirazione mista a timore verso Roberto Longhi, e gli interventi che Gadda dedica alle arti figurative attestano di occhio e penna dell’approccio e dei risultati dell’insigne critico d’arte –, campo di scontro dove convergono rabbie, idiosincrasie, tragico e comico, echi linguistici di volta in volta raffinatissimi o triviali, in un impasto irresistibile dove la descrizione dei fatti narrati assume una densità visiva, pittorica, per alla fine esplodere, ha scritto Alberto Arbasino, in «schegge di incandescente (espressionistica) espressività».

Dante's Vita nuova has taken on a wide variety of different forms since its first publication in 1294. How could one work have generated such different physical forms? Through examining the work's transformations in manuscripts, printed books, translations, and adaptations, Eisner reconceives of the relationship between the work and its reception. Dante's New Life of the Book investigates how these different material manifestations participate in the work, drawing attention to its distinctive elements. Dante framed his book as an attempt to understand his own experiences through the experimental form of the book, and later scribes, editors, and translators use different material forms to embody their interpretations of Dante's collection of thirty-one poems surrounded by prose narrative and commentary. Traveling from Boccaccio's Florence to contemporary Hollywood with stops in Emerson's Cambridge, Rossetti's London, Nerval's Paris, Mandelstam's Russia, De Campos's Brazil, and Pamuk's Istanbul, this study builds on extensive archival research to show how Dante's strange poetic forms, including incomplete canzoni and sonnets with two beginnings, continue to challenge readers. Each chapter focuses on how one of these distinctive features has been treated over time, offering new perspectives on topics such as Dante's love of Beatrice, his relationship with Guido Cavalcanti, and his attraction to another woman. Numerous illustrations show the entanglement of the work's poetic form and its material survival. Eisner provides a fresh reading of Dante's innovations, demonstrating the value of this philological analysis of the work's survival in the world.
