Posing new questions about realism and the creative power of narratives, Rosa Mucignat takes a fresh look at the relationship between representation and reality. As Mucignat points out, worlds evoked in fiction all depend to a greater or lesser extent on the world we know from experience, but they are neither parasites on nor copies of those realms. Never fully aligned with the real world, stories grow out of the mismatch between reality and representation-those areas of the fictional space that are not located on actual maps, but still form a fully structured imagined geography. Mucignat offers new readings of six foundational texts of modern Western culture: Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed, Stendahl'ss The Red and the Black, Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, and Gustave Flaubert's Sentimental Education. Using these texts as source material and supporting evidence for a new and comprehensive theory of space in fiction, she examines the links between the nineteenth-century novel's interest in creating substantial, life-like worlds and contemporary developments in science, art, and society. Mucignat's book is an evocative analysis of the way novels marshal their technical and stylistic resources to produce imagined geographies so complex and engrossing that they intensify and even transform the reader's experience of real-life places.

Montenero Val Cocchiara is usually referred to simply as Montenero, or Mundunur in the local dialect. Montenero is a typical mountain village on the border of the Abruzzo and Molise regions, but it is more than that. Its history was tinted by contacts with numerous powerful groups over many centuries. The village and its people prove to be unique, but they also are highly embued with elements common to all in South Italy. Of course it is the hope of the author that anyone with roots in South Italy will benefit from reading this book. However, his much greater aspiration is that others will equally enjoy the story of Montenero as a metaphor of their own ancestral village or town, regardless of country or even see the village as a microcosm of the world where the forces of history and culture forge the character of people.

As Christianity was diluted and demythologized, 19th century novelists of moral passion yielded to conventions of history and society in a vain effort to preserve spiritual powers. Dickens, Manzoni, Zola and James in grand refusals of mediation, paradoxically preserved the autonomy of the spirit by summoning it down into the very centre of history. The dynamic attraction of the greatest novels by these four authors originates precisely from an unresolvable tension between the spirit and the world.

The Romantic Manifesto written by Larry H. Peer and has been published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Art manifestos categories.

The vexed question of what the Romantics themselves said about Romanticism has been approached in a number of different ways, but their major public declarations have never been gathered together. Indeed, with the exception of a few of these (such as Stendhal's Racine et Shakespeare), this body of evidence has been unavailable to the English-speaking audience. Many of these manifestos are translated here for the first time: the remaining are newly translated for this collection. Taken together, they show Romanticism as a coherent and unified movement appearing in pulses throughout Eastern and Western Europe in the early nineteenth century, with a continual spiritual kinship to Schlegelian origins.
