The lands Germany ceded to Poland after World War I included more than one million ethnic Germans for whom the change meant a sharp reversal of roles. The Polish government now confronted a German minority in a region where power relationships had been the other way around for more than a century. Orphans of Versailles examines the complex psychological and political situation of Germans consigned to Poland, their treatment by the Polish government and society, their diverse strategies for survival, their place in international relations, and the impact of National Socialism. Not a one-sided study of victimization, this book treats the contributions of both the Polish state and the German minority to the conflict that culminated in their mutual destruction. Based largely on research in European archives, it sheds new light on a key aspect of German-Polish relations, one that was long overshadowed by concern over the German revanchist threat and the hostility that subsequently dominated the German-Polish relationship. Thanks to the new political situation in central Europe, however, this topic can finally be addressed evenhandedly.

From the end of the Baroque age and the death of Bach in 1750 to the rise of Hitler in 1933, Germany was transformed from a poor relation among western nations into a dominant intellectual and cultural force more influential than France, Britain, Italy, Holland, and the United States. In the early decades of the 20th century, German artists, writers, philosophers, scientists, and engineers were leading their freshly-unified country to new and undreamed of heights, and by 1933, they had won more Nobel prizes than anyone else and more than the British and Americans combined. But this genius was cut down in its prime with the rise and subsequent fall of Adolf Hitler and his fascist Third Reich-a legacy of evil that has overshadowed the nation's contributions ever since. Yet how did the Germans achieve their pre-eminence beginning in the mid-18th century? In this fascinating cultural history, Peter Watson goes back through time to explore the origins of the German genius, how it flourished and shaped our lives, and, most importantly, to reveal how it continues to shape our world. As he convincingly demonstarates, while we may hold other European cultures in higher esteem, it was German thinking-from Bach to Nietzsche to Freud-that actually shaped modern America and Britain in ways that resonate today.

Reviews I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book. You will need to keep an open mind when reading this story about a group of nuns who become prostitutes. This book is one of the more controversial erotic novels I've read recently. The Prince and the Nun offers another outlook on the oldest profession, with a twist! Although at times Prince Mefist and his sister, Wanda, are blase about what is forced on these nuns, I still found this story kept me interested to discover the fate of these women. It was well written and it displayed emotional depth and character development, as well as the differing viewpoints of the various characters. The author does not intentionally set out to titillate her readers. The Prince and the Nun is interesting and there are some very HOT moments in the book with some very tasteful scenes. The premise offered here is that this may be a situation borne out of the necessity of war; these women simply have no other choice. Aggie Tsirikas JustEroticRomanceReviews.com The Prince and the Nun is the finest thing I have read, combining history, characterization & erotica - - believable erotica - - in decades. The characters are fine, the plot is excellent, the good guys believable without being insipid, the bad guys abominable without being demonic. The story line gives insight into aspects of the period I had never known before and hardly suspected. Higher praise I don't think I could find for a literary work. Jane Gallion, Literary Editor, Renaissance eBooks Wow, talk about breaking some taboos! I found the story to be engaging, the characters well - rounded and the dialogue believable. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was honest humor in these pages as well as sex scenes that are just the right touch of spice that I enjoy. It was fascinating to view these experiences from the eyes of Therese and the other nuns. I especially enjoyed the character of Captain Prince Franz Mefist, the Adjutant of the Army brigade that occupies the castle. It is he who gives Therese the ultimatum and he who supervises the nuns' training as the officers' ''''''''girls''''''''. He is aristocratic with an air of privilege that brooks no compromise, yet is kind and sympathetic to their plight, even as he gives them no room to refuse. As the nuns enter their new profession, they learn several things - there are many wonderful scenes involving their ''''''''enlightenment'''''''', but I won't spoil the fun by divulging everything here. Suffice to say that I recommend that you go read the book. Jacqueline has done a bang - up job and I hope you all enjoy it."

The game of chess was wildly popular in the Middle Ages, so much so that it became an important thought paradigm for thinkers and writers who utilized its vocabulary and imagery for commentaries on war, politics, love, and the social order. In this collection of essays, scholars investigate chess texts from numerous traditions – English, French, German, Latin, Persian, Spanish, Swedish, and Catalan – and argue that knowledge of chess is essential to understanding medieval culture. Such knowledge, however, cannot rely on the modern game, for today’s rules were not developed until the late fifteenth century. Only through familiarity with earlier incarnations of the game can one fully appreciate the full import of chess to medieval society. The careful scholarship contained in this volume provides not only insight into the significance of chess in medieval European culture but also opens up avenues of inquiry for future work in this rich field.
