Featuring contributions from top international scholars in relevant fields, initial readings provide an overview of source material by addressing such topics as manuscript transmission, historical written sources, archaeological evidence, artifacts, and coins. Readings continue with state-of-the-art discussions of various aspects of Marcus Aurelius – his personal biography; political, cultural, and intellectual background; and aspects of his role as emperor, reformer of administration, military leader, and lawgiver. His Meditations are analyzed in detail, including the form of the book, his way of writing, and the various aspects of his philosophy. The final series of readings addresses evolving aspects of his reception. A Companion to Marcus Aurelius offers important new insights on a figure of late antiquity whose unique voice has withstood the centuries to influence contemporary life.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... V.--Marcus Aurelius Antoninus History represents Marcus as discoursing for three days to the assembled Senate--the days preceding his departure for his last campaign--upon the principles of philosophy and the way of virtue; and modern philosophic romance has drawn upon the Thoughts to dramatise the scene in full. While such a resetting is interesting and legitimate, and while it is possible to reproduce with certainty the general colour and contents which such Imperial exhortations must have exhibited, we must not be misled as to the true characters of the Thoughts themselves. These soliloquies were never meant, as some would seem to think, for a set exposition of philosophy; neither are they a homily or treatise intended for edification of readers or the ears of Roman Senators. For adaptation to that purpose something must be put in, and much must be left out. They belong to the privacy of the closet, addressed to no eye or ear but his own --reminiscences, reflections, interrogations, admonitions 'To Himself.' This is the one title that has any vestige of authority, and it were well if they had been always so described and known. They are a manual of personal duty and of self-examination, by which a solitary soul, charged with immense responsibilities, sought to under stand, to discipline, and to confirm itself, and so in the conduct of life to attain a more susceptible appreciation, a more strenuous devotion, a perfected allegiance of will to the leadings of nature and God. Their counterpart has emanated more often from the cell or the hermitage than from the statesman's cabinet or the general's praetorium; they are a De Imitations such as might have been penned amid the isolations of Khartoum. Among philosophers Marcus is neither...

Epictetus Handbook And The Tablet Of Cebes written by Keith Seddon and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-02 with History categories.
This new translation presents two works, one by Epictetus and the other by Cebes, two ancient Greek philosophers of the Imperial period, in new translations of clear, straightforward English. In this book, readers will learn how to sustain emotional harmony and a ‘good flow of life’ whatever fortune may hold in store for them. This modern English translation of the complete Handbook is supported by and includes: * the first thorough commentary since that of Simplicius, 1500 years ago * a detailed introduction * extensive glossary * index of key terms * chapter-by-chapter discussion of themes * helpful tables that clarify Stoic ethical doctrines as a glance. Accompanying the Handbook is the Tablet of Cebes, a curious and engaging text. In complete contrast, yet complementing the Handbook’s more conventional philosophical presentation, the Tablet shows progress to philosophical wisdom as a journey through a landscape inhabited by personifications of happiness, fortune, the virtues and vices.

English Translations From The Greek A Bibliographical Survey written by Finley Melville Kendall Foster and has been published by DigiCat this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-02 with Fiction categories.
Originating from a study of the people's attitude in the first thirty years of the nineteenth century toward the classics, English Translations from the Greek by Finley Melville Kendall Foster lists the significant translations published during those years. In order to have the necessary material for a close study of the original list, extensive research was conducted for around fifty years. The result of these discoveries is embodied in the list of translations that make up this book's contents. Foster hopes to educate people about and make them familiar with the various kinds of Greek literature that have been popular at different times during the last four hundred and thirty years. He has in no way attempted to discuss the standards or the benchmarks of a good translation, the reason being that the making of an English version of a Greek original presents difficulties little distinct from those of translation from any other language into English.
