È il marzo del 1838 e la Ibis, una magnifica goletta a due alberi che, con la vela di maestra e le vele di prora ben tese sembra un uccello dalle grandi ali bianche, è appena arrivata al largo dell'isola di Ganga-Sagar dove il Gange sfocia nel Golfo del Bengala. Dalla nave si scorgono soltanto le sponde fangose dell'isola e i boschi di mangrovie, ma all'interno entrambe le rive del sacro fiume sono già coperte, per chilometri e chilometri, da folte distese di petali rossi, campi sterminati di papaveri. Per quei petali la Ibis è lì, alla foce del Gange, destinata dalla «Benjamin Brightwell Burnham», la compagnia inglese proprietaria, a uno dei traffici più lucrosi dell'Impero britannico: il commercio di «delinquenti e stupefacenti» o, secondo una più elegante espressione, di «oppio e coolie». Il momento, infatti, è eccellente per partecipare alle aste doppio della Compagnia delle Indie orientali e al trasporto di predoni, briganti, criminali, ribelli, cacciatori di teste e teppisti d'ogni razza e genere sulle varie isole-prigione dell'Impero sparse nell'Oceano Indiano. A bordo della Ibis vi è la ciurma più incredibile che si possa incontrare in tutte le acque del Pacifico: un gruppo di lascari, i leggendari marinai cinesi e africani, arabi e malesi, bengalesi e tamil, insomma appartenenti a tutte le razze possibili e immaginabili, che parlano un lingua tutta loro, non hanno altro abito che una striscia di cambrì da avvolgere intorno ai fianchi e vanno in giro scalzi da quando sono nati. A guidarli è un personaggio dall'aspetto formidabile, con una faccia che susciterebbe l'invidia di Gengis Khan: magra, lunga e sottile, con occhi irrequieti e un paio di baffi piumati che gli scendono fino al mento. Nel suo avventuroso viaggio, la Ibis reca a bordo un'umanità davvero straordinaria: il figlio di una schiava liberata del Maryland dalla carnagione color avorio antico; un raja in rovina, il cui viso lungo, scarno e triste esprime esemplarmente il tramonto della vecchia India; una vedova dagli occhi privi di colore che non esita a infrangere i sacri riti della tradizione hindu; un uomo che vuole erigere un tempio alla donna che ha amato e che rivive ora in lui.
