Depuis les commerçants phéniciens de l'Antiquité jusqu'aux porte-conteneurs géants qui sillonnent aujourd'hui les océans avec une régularité de métronome, les risques et les capitaux encourus ont toujours défié les lois terriennes de l'économie.Une collision, un échouage, un acte de piraterie, une pollution ou une tempête peuvent avoir raison en quelques minutes d'un investissement patiemment construit au fil des années. Cet ouvrage s'adresse à tous ceux qu'attirent la rudesse mais aussi la liberté et parfois la bonne fortune procurées par le travail en mer (étudiants, professionnels de la mer, enseignants, administrateurs. ). Il aborde quelques grands secteurs de l'économie maritime française (pêche, pisciculture et conchyliculture, construction navale, transport maritime, ports de pêche et de commerce, tourisme littoral. ) afin d'en établir le bilan des deux décennies écoulées et de les mettre en perspective dans une économie globalisée. La volonté initiale de cet ouvrage est de contribuer à la réflexion en cours sur la politique maritime intégrée européenne et française à partir de l'expertise d'un groupe d'universitaires et d'analystes passionnés par le milieu marin qui se posent ensemble la même question : quels sont les atouts économiques de la France dans le domaine maritime et littoral et peut-elle les développer tout en respectant l'environnement ? Près d'une trentaine de spécialistes en sciences sociales et humaines de la mer ont participé à cet ouvrage dans le cadre d'un partenariat avec la Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Ange Guépin de Nantes. La plupart sont membres du Pôle Mer Littoral de l'université de Nantes. Ce pôle fédère plus de 160 chercheurs répartis en 9 laboratoires de disciplines variées, plusieurs Masters et quelques observatoires spécialisés, dont l'Institut Supérieur d'Economie Maritime - Isemar - et l'observatoire socioéconomique des pêches et des cultures marines du golfe de Gascogne - Aglia.
