Während Margas Vater als leitender Angestellter für eine deutsche Glasfirma in Holland arbeitet und Margas Familie deshalb in guten Verhältnissen lebt, ist Margas Essener Onkel Arzt und deshalb finanziell auch gut gestellt.Gerda und Manfred, Margas Cousine und Cousin, sind Studenten in Göttingen und Marburg. Werner, der Freund von Manfred, der in der Nachbarschaft wohnt, ist der Geliebte von Marga, Manfred bändelt mit Margas Freundin Petra an. Gerda, eigentlich das fünfte Rad am Wagen, ist aber eine eigenständige Persönlichkeit und fühlt sich durch die Pärchen in keiner Weise in ihrer Lebensführung beeinträchtigt, sie nimmt sich später Siegfried zum Mann. Werners Mutter, die nach dem Tod ihres Mannes ins gesellschaftliche Abseits abzudriften drohte, wird mit Margas Hilfe wieder eine attraktive Frau und sie ist wie auch Margas Tante Agnes politisch sehr engagiert. Sowohl in Margas als auch in der Essener Familie werden die sich im Deutschen Reich im Hinblick auf die Etablierung einer Führerdiktatur verdichtenden Ereignisse diskutiert.

The English translation of the letters of Heinrich Himmler and his wife, recently authenticated by the Bundesarchiv and serialized in Die Welt At the end of World War II, it was assumed that the letters of Heinrich Himmler were lost. Yet sixty years after Himmler's capture by British troops and subsequent suicide, the letters mysteriously turned up in Tel Aviv and, in early 2014, excerpts were published for the first time by the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot providing a rare, if jarring, glimpse into the family life of one of Hitler's top lieutenants while he was busy organizing the mass extermination of the Jews. It was generally held that Himmler, once appointed head of the SS, blended seamlessly into the Nazi hierarchy. The image that emerges, however, is more subtle. Himmler is seen here as a man whose observations can often be characterized by their unpleasant banality; a man whose obsession with family life ran alongside a brutal detachment from all things human, a serial killer who oversaw the persecution and extermination of all Jews and other non-Aryans, and those opposed to the regime. His letters remove any doubt that he was the architect of the Final Solution, and a man who was much closer to Hitler than many historians previously thought. The letters in this edition were arranged by Katrin Himmler, the great-niece of Heinrich and Marga Himmler, and Michael Wildt, a renowned expert on the Nazi regime, who also provide historical context to the letters and their author. The entire work was translated by Thomas S. Hansen and Abby J. Hansen.

Robert G. Moeller is the first historian of modern German women to use social policy as a lens to focus on society's conceptions of gender difference and "woman's place." He investigates the social, economic, and political status of women in West Germany after World War II to reveal how the West Germans, emerging from the rubble of the Third Reich, viewed a reconsideration of gender relations as an essential part of social reconstruction. The debate over "woman's place" in the fifties was part of West Germany's confrontation with the ideological legacy of National Socialism. At the same time, the presence of the Cold War influenced all debates about women and the family. In response to the "woman question," West Germans defined the boundaries not only between women and men, but also between East and West. Moeller's study shows that public policy is a crucial arena where women's needs, capacities, and possibilities are discussed, identified, defined, and reinforced. Mit dem deutschen Überfall auf die Niederlande gerieten auch die Juden in existenzielle Gefahr. Leendert Overduin (1900-1976) war Pastor einer kleinen protestantischen Gemeinde in Enschede (NL), als im Mai 1940 deutsche Truppenverbände in die Niederlande einfielen und das Land besetzten. Während der fünfjährigen Besatzungszeit begründete und leitete er eine Organisation, deren einziges Ziel darin bestand, Juden zu helfen. Es war die erste und größte Organisation dieser Art in den Niederlanden überhaupt. Mehr als eintausend Juden (darunter auch einige aus Westfalen!) konnten mit ihrer Hilfe vor der Verhaftung und Deportation in die deutschen Vernichtungslager gerettet werden. Nach dem Krieg blieb Pastor Overduin weiterhin als unermüdlicher Helfer von Bedrängten aktiv. Unter den Hilfesuchenden waren diesmal auch ehemalige Nazisympathisanten und deren Familien. Gestützt auf ein breites Spektrum von Quellen präsentiert das vorliegende Buch erstmals für deutschsprachige Leser die Lebensgeschichte dieses außergewöhnlichen Mannes.

This book explores the Holocaust as a social process. Although the mass murder of European Jews was essentially the result of political-ideological decisions made by the Nazi state leadership, the events of the Holocaust were also part of a social dynamic. All European societies experienced developments that led to the social exclusion, persecution and murder of the continent’s Jews. This volume therefore questions Raul Hilberg ́s category of the ‘bystander’. In societies where the political order expects citizens to endorse the exclusion of particular groups in the population, there cannot be any completely uninvolved bystanders.
