Myths, fantasies and speculations lie at the heart of Marguerite Humeau’s work. Always treading the line between research and fiction, her projects result from in-depth investigations and collaborations with specialists and scientists. At the Palais de Tokyo and Nottingham Contemporary, Humeau is offering a series of unique physical and sensory experiences. Her exhibition FOXP2 is named for the gene whose mutation enabled the arrival of articulate language at the source of our humanity. Here the artist is re-enacting the origins of life and the development of conscious life forms. Imagining a world where giant elephants dominate the planet, Humeau has artificially designed creatures endowed with emotions and consciousness. Book Contents - A conversation between Marguerite Humeau and Bernard Buigues. - A conversation between Marguerite Humeau and Carl Safina. - “Who Knows?”: an essay by Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, curator of Marguerite Humeau’s solo exhibition. About the authors - Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel is a curator at the Palais de Tokyo. - Bernard Buigues is a French explorer. He has organized numerous expeditions to the North Pole and Siberia. He is the founder of Mammuthus, a scientific program aimed at -constructing a record of paleobiodiversity through the collection and preservation of fossils throughout the Siberian Arctic. He defines himself as “a mammoth hunter without weapon.” - Carl Safina is the Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University (NY), where he co-chairs the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and runs the not-for-profit Safina Center. His books include Beyond Words; What Animals Think and Feel (2015). This book is co-published with Nottingham Contemporary.

Rare earth elements are the game-changing foundation of our most powerful innovationsmobile phones, iPods and iPads, liquid crystal displays, LEDs, light bulbs, CDs and DVDs. Often described as conflict materials due to the limited number of accessible mines, they are also integral to cyber-warfare weapon systems, medical technologies, hybrid vehicles, wind turbines, and green energy applications. Consequently, rare earth elements play an increasing role in global affairs and facilitate our changing self-image. Capturing some of todays emergent myths and identities, the well-designed exhibition catalog brings together 17 elementswork by 10 artists and 7 theorists including artists Camille Henrot, The Otolith Group, Ai Weiwei, sociologist and design theorist Benjamin H. Bratton, Finnish new media theorist Jussi Parikka and political theorist Jane Bennett, among others. An attempt to define the spirit of an age, Rare Earth explores how todays myths, identities, and cosmologies relate to current technology while challenging the rhetoric of immateriality.

Working In Architecture written by Jamie Fobert Architects and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Architectural design categories.

Jamie Fobert Architects (JFA) has gained a reputation for innovative and inspiring architectural design for houses, retail and the arts. Working in Architecture sets out to convey not only the finished product of an architecture practice but also to make plain the process of design inherent in the work. With introductory texts by Joseph Rykwert and George Baird, the book is divided into four parts, each of which documents a set of projects by JFA, following the sequence of the design process from sketches to development to completed work. The practice's residential projects are celebrated for their sensitivity to the historic context, which they sympathetically partner with contemporary design concerns. Retail projects, for clients including Selfridges, Givenchy and Versace, have offered the opportunity to explore new ideas and experiment with materiality. The firm has also worked with a number of artists and key arts institutions such as Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Frieze Art Fair, the V&A and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow. The practice has won three major public commissions for extensions to Tate St Ives, Charleston Farmhouse and Kettle's Yard Gallery. Following his graduation from the University of Toronto, Fobert went on to head David Chipperfield Architects' Berlin office before teaching at European schools including the Architectural Association, London, and University of Lausanne, and establishing his own practice in London in 1996. JFA has garnered several awards including the Manser Medal; and the RIBA and English Heritage Award for Building in an Historic Context.

Jonas Mekas has worked together with Andy Warhol, George Maciunas, John Lennon, and many others. In New York he was an influential figure in the New American Cinema, although he came to film-making relatively late. In 1944 Mekas and his younger brother Adolfas had to flee from the Nazis for copying leaflets. They were interned for eight months in a labour camp in Elmshorn. The Soviet occupation prevented him from returning to his native Lithuania after the war and, classed as a ?displaced person?, he lived in DP camps in Wiesbaden and Kassel. Towards the end of 1949 he and his brother emigrated to New York. In his autobiography 'I Had Nowhere to Go' he describes his survival in the camps and his arrival in New York. Mekas tells a universal story, that of an émigré who can never go back, whose loneliness in his new world is emblematic of human existence.

Elephant Destiny written by Martin Meredith and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-04-27 with History categories.

For thousands of years, the majestic elephant has roamed the African continent, as beloved by man as it has been preyed upon. But centuries of exploitation and ivory hunting have taken their toll: now, as wars and poachers continue to ravage its habitat, as disease and political strife deflect attention from its plight, the African elephant faces imminent extinction. What will become of these magnificent beasts? As the elephant's future looms ever darker, Martin Meredith's concise and richly illustrated biography traces the elephant's history from the first ivory expeditions of the Egyptian pharaohs 2500 years ago to today, exploring along the way the indelible imprint the African elephant has made in art, literature, culture, and society. He shares recent extraordinary discoveries about the elephant's sophisticated family and community structure and reveals the remarkable ways in which elephants show compassion and loyalty to each other. Elegant, illuminating, and urgent, Elephant Destiny offers a beautiful and important tribute to one of earth's most magisterial creatures at the very moment it threatens to vanish from being.
