Marie Sklodowska Curie (1867–1934) was the first woman scientist to win worldwide acclaim and was, indeed, one of the great scientists of the twentieth century. Written by Curie’s daughter, the renowned international activist Eve Curie, this biography chronicles Curie’s legendary achievements in science, including her pioneering efforts in the study of radioactivity and her two Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry. It also spotlights her remarkable life, from her childhood in Poland, to her storybook Parisian marriage to fellow scientist Pierre Curie, to her tragic death from the very radium that brought her fame.

Marie Sklodowska Curie (7 November 1867 - 4 July 1934) was one of the greatest scientific minds that brought a fundamental contribution in science opening the door to the understanding/knowledge of the structure of the atom in the 20th century. Marie Sklodowska Curie's hypothesis that the spontaneous emission of powerful rays by some chemical elements, emission that she called radioactivity, is an atomic property of those elements, transformed forever how man would view the atom. Marie Sklodowska Curie is best known for her pioneering research of uranium element, developing the theory of radioactivity, devising isotope isolation/purification methods and for the discovery of chemical elements radium and polonium. Marie Sklodowska Curie's entire life's work is the story of the passion to discover scientific truth for the betterment of mankind.

Marie Sklodowska Curie (1867-1934) was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris. She named the first chemical element she discovered polonium after her native country. She died of aplastic anaemia from exposure to radiation in the course of her scientific research and from her radiological work at field hospitals during WWI. This work is her thesis presented to the Faculté des Sciences de Paris, which appeared in English translation in the Chemical News 1903, Vol. 88, and was published in book form the following year. Illustrated with 12 diagrams.

"The object of the present work is the publication of researches which I have been carrying on for more than four years on radio-active bodies. I began these researches by a study of the phosphorescence of uranium, discovered by M. Becquerel. The results to which I was led by this work promised to afford so interesting a field that Pierre Curie put aside the work on which he was engaged, and joined me, our object being the extraction of new radio-active substances and the further study of their properties."

The Nobel Foundation presents a biographical sketch of French chemist Marie Curie (1867-1934). The biography highlights her education, her career as a chemist, and research with her husband Pierre. The Curies shared a Nobel prize in physics in 1903 for their work on spontaneous radiation. Marie Curie discovered polonium and radium, and she was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1911 for the discovery and the isolation of pure radium.

This book is a companion to the IYC-2011 celebration. The eleven chapters are organized into three sections: Section 1: Marie Curie’s Impact on Science and Society, Section 2: Women Chemists in the Past Two Centuries, and Section 3: Policy Implications. The authors invited to contribute to this book were asked to orient their chapter around a particular aspect of Marie Curie’s life such as the ethical aspects of her research, women’s role in research or her influence on the image of chemists. Our hope is that this book will positively influence young women’s minds and decisions they make in learning of chemistry/science like Marie Curie’s biography. But we do hope this book opens an avenue for young women to explore the possibility of being a scientist, or at least to appreciate chemistry as a human enterprise that has its merit in contributing to sustainability in our world. Also we hope that both men and women will realize that women are fully competent and capable of conducting creative and fascinating scientific research.
