The history of Marin County is intimately connected with the birth and early growth of the state of California. Marin is home to one of the last Spanish missions and the location of the lone battle of the Bear Flag Revolt, which led to California statehood. At that time, Marin was a pastoral paradise that supplied most of the raw materials for the exploding population of Gold Rush Era San Francisco. Fifty years later, its temperate climate and the devastation wrought by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire brought on a veritable "land rush'? to the region. The photographs in this book capture moments in time that tell the story of a people and land that have shaped Marin's past, present, and future. Working closely with the staff of the Marin History Museum, Scott Fletcher has carefully selected images from the museum's collection and brought their stories to life in a series of articles that first appeared in the Marin Independent Journal newspaper. The image subjects are diverse, including landscapes, towns, people, businesses, homes, and modes of transportation representing all geographic areas of the county.

Maritime Marin written by Branwell Fanning and has been published by Arcadia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with History categories.

Marin County's spectacular Pacific coast has been noted as both one of the most beautiful locations on earth and--for some early mariners--a place of absolute terror. The rocky coast here has claimed hundreds of ships and the lives of thousands of sailors. Though long known for its beautiful natural settings of woodlands, beaches, and hills, Marin's maritime history is surprisingly varied, with tales of English pirates, Spanish explorers, Yankee whalers, and an immense wartime shipbuilding effort. The rocky seascapes and sandy beaches of Point Reyes, Bolinas, and Stinson Beach--along with the bay-side villages of Sausalito, Tiburon, and San Rafael--have long been important ports for commercial and pleasure mariners.

A captivating collection of original science fiction and fantasy stories based on the same alternate world premise: a collection of documents that have been suppressed by the Vatican and hidden away for years, in some cases centuries, are revealed when the vaults are thrown open by a reforming pope. In this alternate reality, Pope John Paul (I) does not die a month after his accession in 1978; instead he lives on for over 30 years to become the most reforming pope of all time. In addition to relaxing the rules on birth control and priestly celibacy he also opens up the most secret parts of the Vatican Library to scholars . . . In the Vatican's deepest vaults, documents are discovered which shed new light on world history, containing information which, if true, would cause many parts of accepted history to have to be rewritten. These include not just the undercover involvement of the Catholic Church in world affairs, but documented accounts of what really happened in historical conundrums, the real lives of saints and popes, miracles, magic, angels and even alien encounters.

One cannot imagine a child saying, 'Tell me a folk-tale', or 'Another nursery tale, please, grandma'. It must also be taken to cover tales in which something magical happens. Mostly it is the comical stupidity of some of the actors, as is so common in moral tales. In buying this book you will be giving in more than one way. Once to the Children in Need appeal and again, to yourself, as you read and enjoy stories not read for many a year. But should you perchance happen to read these stories to your children, nieces and nephews or grand-children, you will be giving yet again. 50% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the appeal. So take some time out and travel back to a period before television, or even radio for that matter, when families would gather around a crackling and spitting hearth and granddad or grandma or an uncle or aunt would delight and captivate their audience with stories passed on to them from their mothers, fathers and grandparents. =============== TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, lore, Children in Need, Appeal, Tom Tit Tot, English, King O'toole, Goose, Ireland, Origin Of Loch Ness, Scotland, Widow, Daughters, Fair, Brown, Trembling, Perfidious Vizier, Arabia, Frog's Skin, Turtle-Dove, Sage-Cock, Witch, Giant, Cause Of Thunder, West Africa, Parrot's Song, Armenia, Emperor Tenchi, Beggar King, Jewish, Foolish, Timid Rabbit, Cradle Song, Charmed Ring, Thirteenth Son, King Of Erin, Celtic, Minister, Fujiwara, Japan, Monkey’s Fiddle, Jataka, Daughter, Rose, Romania, Gypsy, Dragon, Sacred Duck, Yellow Breast, Tibet, Gelert, wales, Kingfisher, War Bonnet, American Indian, Sun, Moon, Wind, Out To Dinner, India, Night Before Christmas, Viking, Tail

These early works by Guy de Maupassant were originally published in the 1880's. As a collection of short stories, this represents Maupassant's tales set in Paris, and includes 'The Patron', 'The Wardrobe', 'Waiter, a Bock', 'The Dowry', 'Moiron', 'Mademoiselle Pearl', and many other titles. Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850 at the Château de Miromesnil, near Dieppe, France. He came from a prosperous family, but when Maupassant was eleven, his mother risked social disgrace by trying to secure a legal separation from her husband. After the split, Maupassant lived with his mother till he was thirteen, and inherited her love of classical literature. In 1880, Maupassant published his first – and, according to many, his best – short story, entitled 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'). It was an instant success. He went on to be extremely prolific during the 1880s, working methodically to produce up to four volumes of short fiction every year. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.
