Mariposas en la boca comprende un conjunto de relatos estructurado en cuatro partes. La primera es una visión actualizada de algunos cuentos maravillosos que se presentan con su antítesis; la segunda expone algunas formas de la ficción surgidas en instantes que desembocan en situaciones inciertas; la tercera evoca estereotipos de la literatura clásica —por ejemplo de la Odisea— reivindicando la forma en la que la vida se confunde con la ficción en los actos más anodinos; y la cuarta pone de relieve los vacíos que quedan en la cotidianidad cuando la realidad parece diluirse en un sueño extraordinario. El libro, en su singular totalidad, reelabora distintas formas de ver la condición cruda e inesperada de la existencia, al tiempo que deconstruye los modos en que la literatura o los imaginarios sociales configuran un universo idealizado. Se trazan aquí formas fantásticas e idílicas del amor y la esperanza (como en los cuentos maravillosos), que muestran instantáneas de la vida (como si se pudieran dibujar en un papel), que revelan su rostro novelesco (cercano a las formas prefiguradas por la literatura) o que ponen en evidencia la delgada línea entre lo real y lo ficticio (como en el sueño). Los relatos reunidos en Mariposas en la boca nos recuerdan cuán distantes podemos estar de aquello que imaginamos y que nos obliga a reconciliarnos con la extraña manera en que suceden las cosas cuando las vivimos.

Jana Evans Braziel launches a comparative study of art, politics, history, urban street cultures, engaged citizenships, and social transformations in three Antillean capital cities—Havana, Cuba; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and San Juan, Puerto Rico—of the Greater Caribbean. The book includes a photo documentary archive of street art, murals, and installations by key muralists in these cities: Yulier Rodriguez Pérez, "Jerry" Rosembert Moïse, and Colectivo Moriviví (Chachi González Colón, Raysa Rodríguez García, and Salomé Cortés). Braziel offers art historical and geopolitical analyses of the urban street art in their cities of production, underscoring street art as political, economic, and environmental engagements (and not as exclusively aesthetic ones) with urban space and street life. The first Nobel Prize in literature to be awarded to a Latin American writer went to the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. Famous and beloved during her lifetime all over Latin America and in Europe, Mistral has never been known in North America as she deserves to be. The reputation of her more flamboyant and accessible friend and countryman Pablo Neruda has overshadowed hers, and she has been officially sentimentalized into a "poetess" of children and motherhood. Translations, and even selections of her work in Spanish, have tended to underplay the darkness, the strangeness, and the raging intensity of her poems of grief and pain, the yearning power of her evocations of the Chilean landscape, the stark music of her Round Dances, the visionary splendor of her Hymns of America. During her lifetime Mistral published four books: Desolation, Tenderness, Clearcut, and Winepress. These are included in the "Complete" Nobel edition published in Madrid; the Poem of Chile, her last book, was printed years after her death. Le Guin includes poems from all five books in this volume, with particular emphasis on the later work. The intelligence and passion of Le Guin's selection and translation will finally allow people in the North to hear the originality, power, purity, and intransigence of this great American voice. Le Guin has published five volumes of her own poetry, an English version of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching, and a volume of mutual translation with the Argentine poet Diana Bellessi, The Twins, the Dream/Las Gemalas, El Sueño. Strongly drawn to Mistral's work as soon as she discovered it, Le Guin has been working on this translation for five years.
