This book should be of interest to scholars, researchers, students, and practitioners alike. Scholars, researchers, and students of personal relationship development will recognize in this book the first serious attempt in over 40 years to do a large-scale, longitudinal study of premarital factors that predict premarital breakup and marital quality; they should also appreciate our attempt to develop a theoretical rationale for predicted paths and to test those paths with the best available statistical tools. Practitioners-while generally not as interested in the intricacies of the statistical results-will find much that is useful to them as they help individuals and couples make decisions about their intimate relationships, their readiness for marriage, and how to increase the probability for marital success. My interest in the development of relationships from premarital to marital probably began when I got married in 1972 and started to notice all of the characteristics my wife and I brought from our respective families and how our “new beginning” as a married couple was in many ways the continuation of our premarital relationship, only more refined and more intense. My professional interest began when I did my doctoral dissertation in 198 1 on premarital predictors of early marital satisfaction (the results of that study are reported in Chapter 8).

Over a century of research suggests that marriage is good for one's health. Specifically, individuals who are married experience, on average, longer and healthier lives than their unmarried counterparts. However, these aggregate findings mask significant differences within each of these groups. Utilizing data from the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS I and II; N = 1,805) dataset, the current project addresses three research questions: 1) What are the long-term health consequences of low-quality marital relationships? 2) How does the accumulation of life events influence the health and well-being of individuals who experienced a divorce? and 3) What types of social support - if any - effectively buffer the negative impact of a low-quality marriage on individual-level health and well-being? Several key findings emerged from the three main research questions. First, individuals who remain in a long-term, low-quality marriage will report significantly lower levels of well-being than individuals in a high-quality marriage. Second, the accumulation of life events plays an important role in the relationship between exposure to events and health and well-being. More specifically, individuals who are exposed to parental divorce during childhood experience better health and well-being following their own divorce than individuals whose parents were continually married. Importantly, this suggests that the mere accumulation of stressors over the life course does not necessarily equate to negative health outcomes. Rather, the type of stressors an individual is exposed to is key to understanding life course health and well-being. Finally, the social support mechanism that operates to ameliorate the health consequences of negative marital interactions is highly specific. Further research is necessary to identify which types of support (e.g. kin, friend, job) improve specific aspects of well-being (e.g. happiness, depression, anxiety).

The current study reviews previous research supporting the utility of a two-dimensional conceptualization of marital quality and its association with cognitive attributions. Extension of these results to two categories of attributions, distress-maintaining and relationship-enhancing attributions, was attempted. Attributions were measured using a self-report inventory and an observational coding system for a videotaped problem-solving interaction. Married couples from a college and community sample (N = 83) participated. The current study yielded partial support for the utility of two-dimensional marital quality as a predictor of the measures of attributions, particularly for coded attributions. Two-dimensional marital quality might be especially useful in accounting for motivation to improve the marriage as a factor operating on the association between quality and attributions. Discussion summarizes current results, discrepancies between current and previous research, limitations of the current study, and avenues for further research to clarify the conditions under which two-dimensional marital quality is most useful.

The first goal of this study was to examine differences in marital quality in couples after the birth of a first or second child. It was hypothesized that second-time parents would report lower levels of marital quality than first-time parents. The second goal was to determine if parity moderated the association between family stress and marital quality. It was hypothesized that second-time parents would show stronger negative associations between family stressors and marital quality than first-time parents. Sixty-two first-time and 64 second-time couples were administered questionnaires about the quality of their marital relationship. The marital relationship was divided into aspects common to all married couples (i.e., satisfaction, communication and conflict, companionship, and intimacy) and aspects specific to parents of young children (i.e., parenting alliance, satisfaction with role division of childcare, and childrearing disagreements). Couples also completed questionnaires about family stressors (i.e., daily hassles, depressed mood, and their child(ren)'s temperament). Results indicated that second-time parents engaged in fewer companionship activities and were less satisfied with the amount of time spent in companionship activities and the amount of time spent communicating than first-time parents. Second-time couples reported lower levels of a parenting alliance and more childrearing disagreements than first-time parents. There was a trend for second-time couples to report lower levels of marital adjustment and higher levels of marital conflict than first-time parents. There were no significant differences between first- and second-time parents in avoiding marital disputes, frequency of communication, intimacy, and satisfaction with division of childcare roles. Daily hassles and parent depression mood predicted general aspects of marital quality for both mothers and fathers. Child(ren)'s temperament predicted fathers' parenting marital quality. Overall, there was little evidence for the hypothesis that second-time parents would show more negative associations between family stressors and marital quality than first-time parents. Results underscore that the transition from parenting one child to parenting two children may place stress on the marital relationship. These findings build on a body of literature showing that family relationships and family members' individual well-being are affected by the birth of a sibling. .
