A university education is a transformative experience in many ways: For example, graduates develop crucial skills that can be applied in countless jobs and professions, they grow as educated people, and they are prepared for further advanced studies and/or directly for a chosen profession. The payment for that experience involves an outlay of both time and money. This report shows that there are three variables that are most strongly correlated with graduate outcomes and their financial circumstances upon graduation: their parents' educational background, whether the graduates were living in the Maritime region prior to enrolling in their first degree, and the discipline of their first degree. Before reviewing the salient findings and their implications, we begin by reviewing some important background information about the three principal variables.

Against the background of a global financial crisis and economic downturn, growth in seaborne trade continued, albeit at a slower rate. Existing forecasts suggest that the outlook for seaborne trade is uncertain and that some challenging times lie ahead for shipping and international seaborne trade. These challenges are further compounded by other developments, including maritime security at sea and the need to address the climate change challenge. The Review of Maritime Transport examines trends in sea-borne trade and analyses the comparative performance of different geographic regions and countries. Every year, the Review of Maritime Transport gives attention to transport developments in a particular region. The focus in 2009 is on developments in Africa since 2006 when UNCTAD last reported on the region.

Contemporary Maritime Piracy In Southeast Asia written by Adam J. Young and has been published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-30 with History categories.

This book explores contemporary maritime piracy in Southeast Asia, demonstrating the utility of using historical context in developing policy approaches that will address the roots of this resurgent phenomenon. The depth and breadth of historical piracy help highlight causative factors of contemporary piracy, which are immersed in the socio-cultural matrix of maritime-oriented peoples to whom piracy is still a "thinkable" option. The threats to life and property posed by piracy are relatively low, but significant given the strategic nature of these waterways that link the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and because piracy is emblematic of broader issues of weak state control in the littoral states of the region. Maritime piracy will never be completely eliminated, but with a progressive economic and political agenda aimed at changing the environment from which piracy is emerging, it could once again become the exception rather than the rule.
