Drawing on frame theory from cogntive science, this book shows that as a product of oral-aural cultures the Gospel of Mark is basically an 'background knowledge'-based story; and hence it can be only properly understood by the help of frames which the speaker and audience shared.

How did the Gospel of Mark come to exist? And how was the memory of Jesus shaped by the experiences of the earliest Christians? For centuries, biblical scholars examined texts as history, literature, theology, or even as story. Curiously absent, however, has been attention to processes of collective memory in the creation of biblical texts. Drawing on modern explorations of social memory, Sandra Huebenthal presents a model for reading biblical texts as collective memories. She demonstrates that the Gospel of Mark is a text evolving from collective narrative memory based on recollections of Jesus’s life and teachings. Huebenthal investigates the principles and structures of how groups remember and how their memory is structured and presented. In the case of Mark’s Gospel, this includes examining which image of Jesus, as well as which authorial self-image, this text as memory constructs. Reading Mark’s Gospel as a Text from Collective Memory serves less as a key to unlock questions about the historical Jesus and more as an examination of memory about him within a particular community, providing a new and important framework for interpreting the earliest canonical gospel in context.

This dissertation reevaluates the tradition of Jesus' sayings in the Apostolic Fathers in light of the growing recognition of the impact of orality upon early Christianity and its writings. At the beginning of the last century it was common to hold that the Apostolic Fathers made wide use of the canonical Gospels. While a number of studies have since called this view into question, many of them simply replace the theory of dependence upon canonical Gospels with one of dependence upon other written sources. No full-scale study of Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers has been published which takes into account the last four decades of new research into oral tradition in the wake of the pioneering work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. Based on this new research, the present dissertation advances the thesis that an oral-traditional source best explains the form and content of the explicit appeals to Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers that predate 2 Clement. In the course of the discussion, attention is drawn to the ways in which the Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers informs our understanding of the use of oral tradition in Christian antiquity.

Balanced, comprehensive survey of the critical questions involved in studying the four Gospels In this book, through a distinctive evangelical and critical approach, Michael Bird explores the historical development of the four canonical Gospels. He shows how the memories and faith of the earliest believers formed the Gospel accounts of Jesus that got written and, in turn, how these accounts further shaped the early church. Bird's study clarifies the often confusing debates over the origins of the canonical Gospels. Bird navigates recent concerns and research as he builds an informed case for how the early Christ followers wrote and spread the story of Jesus -- the story by which they believed they were called to live. The Gospel of the Lord is ideal for students or anyone who wants to know the story behind the four Gospels. Watch an interview with Michael Bird from our Eerdmans Author Interview Series:

The book “Jesus’s Epithets: ‘Teacher’ and ‘Prophet’ – A Cognitive Semantics Approach to Social Roles” is based on a completed PhD thesis from the Doctoral School of Languages and Cultural Identities at the University of Bucharest. It focuses on the interplay between Jesus’s epithets, specifically “teacher” and “prophet,” using cognitive semantics as a framework for analysis. The book explores the complementarity of these roles, highlighting their portrayal of Jesus’s key attributes and his dual human-divine identity. Cognitive linguistics provides the perspective for delving into these social roles, emphasizing their significance in understanding the complexity of Jesus’s character. It shows that Jesus embodies two complementary epithets – “teacher” and “prophet” – representing distinct approaches to knowledge transmission, either through human activity or divine intervention. The chapters systematically examine the roles of teacher and prophet, employing cognitive semantics tools and exploring textual fragments. The analysis of parables as Jesus’s preferred form of teaching uses metaphor and conceptual blending theories, providing insights into his pedagogical endeavors. The examination of Jesus as a prophet draws upon Dahlgren’s stereotypical model, establishing compelling evidence for Jesus’s prophetic role. The final chapter underscores the overlap between the teacher and prophet roles, emphasizing the usefulness of the radial concept. It challenges the notion of sequential roles, asserting that Jesus is simultaneously both a teacher and a prophet, with the two functions coexisting. The book illustrates the intricate complexity of Jesus’s character proving that Jesus not only fulfills but surpasses typical expectations in both roles, consistently revealing his dual identity and the permanent truth of both epithets.

In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum Christina Eschner examines the Early Christian disputes about the Jewish law against the background of Ancient Jewish discourses on commands of the law, in order to situate the Early Christian practice of the law within its broader context. Jewish sources include the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish writings in Greek and early rabbinic texts. This study focusses on rules concerning prohibited food, table fellowship and the permissible way of food intake. Pagan traditions are also considered. Thus, the work has an interdisciplinary orientation, discussing issues at the junction of New Testament studies, Classics, Ancient History and Jewish studies. It concludes that Early Christian food discourses do not aim for the complete abolition of the law.

What sets The Theological Intentions of Mark's Literary Devices apart from other books? What niche does it fill that makes its publication important? This volume will interest all those who value a literary approach to the Gospel of Mark. Dean Deppe introduces some new literary devices in the research of the Gospel of Mark as well as demonstrates the theological intentions of Mark when he employs these literary devices. Deppe argues that Mark employs the literary devices of intercalation, framework, allusionary repetitions, narrative surprises, and three types of mirroring to indicate where he speaks symbolically and metaphorically at two levels. Mark employs these literary devices not just for dramatic tension and irony, but also for theological reasons to apply the Jesus tradition to specific problems in his own day.
