Gibt es in dem zunehmend differenzierten und segmentierten Fach Politikwissenschaft einen Bereich, in dem die verschiedenen Fragestellungen und Ansätze zusammengeführt werden, so ist dies die Geschichte der politischen Ideen sowie die politische Theorie. Insbesondere die politische Ideengeschichte erweist sich dabei als das Laboratorium, in dem gegenwärtige politische Konstellationen gleichsam experimentell an den Theoriegebäuden vergangener Zeiten überprüft, durchdacht und intellektuell bearbeitet werden können. Eine so verstandene politische Ideengeschichte ist gegenwartsbezogen, auch wenn sie sich den aktuellen politischen Problemen nur mittelbar zuzuwenden scheint. Diese Reihe ist ein Ort für die Publikation solcher Studien. Sie veröffentlicht herausragende Texte zur politischen Ideengeschichte und zur politischen Theorie.

This volume explores the relevance of decline within the republican tradition. While scholarship on republicanism thrives, the idea of decline, which has been prominent in republican theory since antiquity, has received relatively little attention. The essays in this volume take a broad cultural perspective and study a wide variety of authors and (con)texts to situate decline among the key concepts in the history of republicanism. Most contributions focus on the Dutch Republic during the Age of Enlightenment and Revolutions, the area of expertise of Wyger Velema, to whom this volume is dedicated. Other case studies include early modern Spain and Venice, the German Enlightenment, and the Weimar Republic. The period from 1780 to 1850 witnessed an unprecedented explosion of philosophical creativity in the German territories. In the thinking of Kant, Schiller, Fichte, Hegel, and the Hegelian school, new theories of freedom and emancipation, new conceptions of culture, society, and politics, arose in rapid succession. The members of the Hegelian school, forming around Hegel in Berlin and most active in the 1830’s and 1840’s, are often depicted as mere epigones, whose writings are at best of historical interest. The period leading up to the Revolutions of 1848 was a seminal moment in the history of political thought, demarcating the ideological currents and defining the problems of freedom and social cohesion which are among the key issues of modern politics. This 2006 anthology offers research on Hegel's followers in the 1830s and 1840s. With essays by philosophers, political scientists, and historians from Europe and North America, it pays special attention to questions of state power, the economy, poverty, and labour, as well as to ideas on freedom. The book examines the political and social thought of Eduard Gans, Ludwig Feuerbach, Max Stirner, Bruno and Edgar Bauer, the young Engels, and Marx. It places them in the context of Hegel's philosophy, the Enlightenment, Kant, the French Revolution, industrialization, and urban poverty. It also views Marx and Engels in relation to their contemporaries and interlocutors in the Hegelian school.
