One Canada is a vision of creating a strong and united Canada, out of the dysfunctional federation of 10 provinces and three territories, leading to the greatest country on Earth. Canada was created to be a strong country, nurturing the regions, eventually becoming greater than its parts. As Canada grew from infancy, the provinces, the aunts and uncles of Confederation, also grew and aspired to become independent countries on their own. Since the Centennial in 1967, the young Canada grew, exerting the rights given to it by the Constitution. The aunts and uncles, having designs of nationhood, began resenting the young adult, forcing it to gradually ceding its control and now is a nearly impotent custodian of Canadian citizenship, and almost equal to the aunts and uncles in stature. The Canadian Federation has devolved into a state of feudalism, where "passing the buck" is the common denominator between the federal and provincial governments. Municipal governments blame the provincial for their ills; the provinces then blame the federal government with the buck passing in a vicious circle. Inside the vicious circle are the people of Canada bound in red tape while being taxed to death to pay for the ineffectiveness of governments. With each provincial government determined to create its own kingdom within Canada, One Canada will never be a reality, unless a new paradigm of governance is developed for all of Canada. The new paradigm is governance at the local municipal level, supervised by the national government. The Fathers of Confederation clearly defined the powers and responsibilities of the federal Parliament and the provincial legislatures. Had the clear division of powers been followed, Canada would, today, be greater than the sum of its regions. For the first 100 years of Confederation, the provincial governments, like aunts and uncles, helped nurture Canada through the adolescent years and into nationhood. Like the Jamaican Proverb, "Two bull caan reign in a the same pen"*, the 10 provincial and one federal government have been locking horns together. Throughout their history, the Jamaican people perpetually struggle to survive under extraordinarily harsh economic and social conditions. from a historical perspective, this is fundamental to understanding the psyche of Jamaicans migrating to and settling in Canada in search of a better and more prosperous life. Therefore, their courage and determination have a backdrop, which the reader must be familiar with in order to understand the Jamaican desire f or respect, peace and dignity. Significantly this book provides a classic account of the Jamaican experience settling in Canada over a period of five decades starting from the 1950s and lasting until the 2000s. It is divided into five chapters, three of which encompass interviews with individuals who immigrated to Canada. Each of the three chapters covers a twenty year period: the 1950s and 60s, the 1970s and 80s, and the 1990s and beyond. in order to provide a credible description of what the general experience might entail, three heuristic methods were employed to gather the most accurate data available. a literature review was conducted to expand and strengthen the author's knowledge base of the subject matter. the auth or researched a number of books, newspaper articles and internet publications which provided critical perspectives from writers who tried to interpret attitudes and behaviors directed at Jamaicans on their journey towards settling in Canada. These perspectives include covert and overt issues connected to various categories of immigrants: those who came under the nursing, domestic, and seasonal agricultural worker programs and those who came as visitors. Furthermore, a plethora of literature was reviewed about Jamaicans, in general, (including middle and upper class Jamaicans who came to Canada significantly as independents) and their achievements. This secondary information and paper-based survey data assisted the auth or in crafting the last two chapters of the book.

Smith, Wall Street Journal Frederick Douglass recalled that slaves living along Chesapeake Bay longingly viewed sailing ships as "freedom’s swift-winged angels." In 1813 those angels appeared in the bay as British warships coming to punish the Americans for declaring war on the empire. Over many nights, hundreds of slaves paddled out to the warships seeking protection for their families from the ravages of slavery. The runaways pressured the British admirals into becoming liberators. As guides, pilots, sailors, and marines, the former slaves used their intimate knowledge of the countryside to transform the war. They enabled the British to escalate their onshore attacks and to capture and burn Washington, D.C. Tidewater masters had long dreaded their slaves as "an internal enemy." By mobilizing that enemy, the war ignited the deepest fears of Chesapeake slaveholders. It also alienated Virginians from a national government that had neglected their defense. Instead they turned south, their interests aligning more and more with their section. In 1820 Thomas Jefferson observed of sectionalism: "Like a firebell in the night [it] awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once the knell of the union." The notes of alarm in Jefferson's comment speak of the fear aroused by the recent crisis over slavery in his home state. His vision of a cataclysm to come proved prescient. Jefferson's startling observation registered a turn in the nation’s course, a pivot from the national purpose of the founding toward the threat of disunion. Drawn from new sources, Alan Taylor's riveting narrative re-creates the events that inspired black Virginians, haunted slaveholders, and set the nation on a new and dangerous course.
