More than a broad and general overview, Introduction to Family Development provides an excellent introduction to numerous distinct relationship topics. The text incorporates thought provoking reading selections that address demographic transitions, marriage, remarriage, and cohabitation. It also addresses culture, social processes in the construction of gender, stepfamilies, love, family communication, child abuse, intimate partner violence, health, and stress. Two readings are devoted exclusively to theory and theoretical perspectives but many of the readings clearly specify the theoretical framework guiding the ideas. This gives students the opportunity to learn how a given theory can be applied to more than one topic. Introducing students to primary research literature promotes discussions about how data are gathered, and how findings, tables, and figures are interpreted. This textbook is appropriate for introductory and midlevel courses. It can also be used as a supplement to more traditional textbooks. Comprehensive in scope but manageable for first year students, Introduction to Family Development addresses family, family development, and family functioning from the perspectives of scholars in the fields of sociology, psychology, and family studies. The book serves as a foundational text that prepares students for later, more content-specific courses on family issues. Chalandra M. Bryant earned her Ph.D. in child development and family relationships in 1996 at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Bryant is currently a professor of human development and family science at the University of Georgia, where she teaches courses in family development, intimate relationships, and family theories. Dr. Bryant has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Family Theory and Review, and her work has been published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Family Psychology, and Personal Relationships. She earned the Outstanding Young Professional Award, presented by the University of Texas, Texas Exes Alumni Association.

The lucid, straightforward Preface of this Handbook by the two editors and the comprehenSIve perspec tives offered in the Introduction by one ofthem leave little for a Foreword to add. It is therefore limIted to two relevant but not intrinsically related points vis-a-vis research on marriage and the family in the interval since the fIrst Handbook (Christensen, 1964) appeared, namely: the impact on this research ofthe politicization of the New RIght! and of the Feminist Enlightenment beginning in the mid-sixties, about the time of the fIrst Handbook. In the late 1930s Willard Waller noted: "Fifty years or more ago about 1890, most people had the greatest respect for the institution called the family and wished to learn nothing whatever about it. . . . Everything that concerned the life of men and women and their children was shrouded from the light. Today much of that has been changed. Gone is the concealment of the way in which life begins, gone the irrational sanctity of the home. The aura of sentiment which once protected the family from discussion clings to it no more .... We wantto learn as much about it as we can and to understand it as thoroughly as possible, for there is a rising recognition in America that vast numbers of its families are sick-from internal frustrations and from external buffeting. We are engaged in the process of reconstructing our family institutions through criticism and discussion" (1938, pp. 3-4).

An original theory asserts that this distinctive form of kinship system developed in the northern Mediterranean around the fourth century A.D., and that its subsequent growth can be attributed to the efforts of the early Christian Church to acquire property formerly held by domestic groups.

Family life has been radically transformed over the past three decades. Half of all households are unmarried, while only a quarter of all married households have kids. A third of the nation's births are to unwed mothers, and a third of America's married men earn less than their wives. With half of all women cohabitating before they turn thirty and gay and lesbian couples settling down with increasing visibility, there couldn't be a better time for a book that tracks new conceptions of marriage and family as they are being formed. The editors of this volume explore the motivation to marry and the role of matrimony in a diverse group of men and women. They compare empirical data from several emerging family types (single, co-parent, gay and lesbian, among others) to studies of traditional nuclear families, and they consider the effect of public policy and recent economic developments on the practice of marriage and the stabilization or destabilization of family. Approaching this topic from a variety of perspectives, including historical, cross-cultural, gendered, demographic, socio-biological, and social-psychological viewpoints, the editors highlight the complexity of the modern American family and the growing indeterminacy of its boundaries. Refusing to adhere to any one position, the editors provide an unbiased account of contemporary marriage and family.

Child Influences on Marital and Family Interaction: A Life-Span Perspective book grew out of a conference sponsored by the Division of Individual and Family Studies in the College of Human Development at the Pennsylvania State University in April, 1977. The chapters for this volume are revised versions of the papers originally presented at the conference. The book explores the conceptual, methodological, and empirical issues in the study of the child and his or her family. It details how the age-normative and atypical development of the child contributes to the parents' marital quality and to the entire family's interaction patterns across the life-span of both the child and parents. Consequently, the child is seen as capable of contributing to marriage and family relationships not only when he or she is in utero, a neonate, or an infant, but also when the child reaches middle and late childhood, adolescence, and the adulthood and aged years as well.
