Excerpt from Mars as the Abode of Life IN 1906 Professor Lowell was asked by the trustee of the Lowell Institute to deliver a course of lectures there upon the planet Mars. Eleven years had elapsed since, at the invitation of the former trustee, he had done the like. When the time came for their delivery unusual interest was manifested, the course proving the most thronged of any ever given before the Insti tute. So great was the demand for seats that the hall could not contain the crowd, and the lectures had to be repeated in the afternoons, to audiences almost as large. The eight lectures were then published, with Slight changes, in six papers in the Century Magazine, and were subsequently wanted by Macmillan and Com pany for issuance in book form. “This provocative and exciting book . . . makes a startling case for there being life on Mars.” —Whitley Strieber, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Communion The Martians is an in-depth study of the theory that Mars was once a world that teemed with life. Perhaps, even, life not too dissimilar to ours. Incredibly, the Martians may still be there. Alive. The questions that this book asks and answers include the following: • What kind of society did the Martians have? • What caused their world to become harsh and desert-like? • Did global warming or nuclear war ensure the extinction of the Martians? • Are Martian artifacts strewn about the surface, just waiting to be found by the likes of NASA? • Has NASA already found such evidence, but chosen to withhold such monumental finds from the public and the media? • Could some form of the Martians still exist, deeply below the surface of the planet, in secure installations that allow them to ensure their civilization continues? • What do we know about the Martian environment, its atmosphere, and its landscape? The Martians explores the CIA’s top-secret search for the Martians, multiple photos of strange anomalies, and the latest revelations about the environment and water on Mars. And most tantalizing of all: Did an ailing Martian race come to Earth in past eons and were they confused with gods? The questions concerning life on Mars—then and now—are many. The answers are astounding.

The Oxford Handbook Of Science Fiction written by Rob Latham and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

The Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction attempts to descry the historical and cultural contours of SF in the wake of technoculture studies. Rather than treating the genre as an isolated aesthetic formation, it examines SF's many lines of cross-pollination with technocultural realities since its inception in the nineteenth century, showing how SF's unique history and subcultural identity has been constructed in ongoing dialogue with popular discourses of science and technology. The volume consists of four broadly themed sections, each divided into eleven chapters. Section I, "Science Fiction as Genre," considers the internal history of SF literature, examining its characteristic aesthetic and ideological modalities, its animating social and commercial institutions, and its relationship to other fantastic genres. Section II, "Science Fiction as Medium," presents a more diverse and ramified understanding of what constitutes the field as a mode of artistic and pop-cultural expression, canvassing extra-literary manifestations of SF ranging from film and television to videogames and hypertext to music and theme parks. Section III, "Science Fiction as Culture," examines the genre in relation to cultural issues and contexts that have influenced it and been influenced by it in turn, the goal being to see how SF has helped to constitute and define important (sub)cultural groupings, social movements, and historical developments during the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Finally, Section IV, "Science Fiction as Worldview," explores SF as a mode of thought and its intersection with other philosophies and large-scale perspectives on the world, from the Enlightenment to the present day.
