Ten years earlier, Carmen had been an impulsive eight year old student at the Dream Caster Institute on the space station orbiting the Earth's moon. She had been expelled from study there, for abusing her powers. Angry about her older sister Marisol's suicide some years before, Carmen grew to blame the Institute for her sister's mental illness that led to her death and was bitter about her own expulsion. Carmen had the skills and the intellect to follow in her sister's footsteps as the beacon child at the Institute, yet, she never fit in because of her bad temperament and her extraordinary abilities. She came from Colombia South America, to study at the Institute, and unlike her peers, she already had mastered advanced dream sequencing abilities. While other students acquired these skills as well as a sense of appreciation and patience, humility and tolerance, Carmen missed the importance of undergoing this process. Carmen became a bad influence on Maximilian Herman who was just six years old at the time. He was identified, because of his advanced dream sequencing skills and was the Institute's rising star. Short of corrupting Max, Carmen caught the wrath of the advanced level adults in charge of the Institute known as "Controllers" and was quickly expelled. She went away; but her abilities did not. Ten years later, she was placed in a position of power at the rival Mars mining and agricultural development. Carmen had the skills of the Earth Moon Controllers and gained considerable wealth, but she was full of animosity. Maximilian Herman was the only human being that could stand in her way. It was customary for the wife of a nobleman in eighteenth-century Spain to be courted fervently and seemingly forever, by a man who was not her husband. This liaison, accepted and even encouraged by the husband, was presumably platonic, though that may not always have been the case. It was carried on according to a complex, if ambiguous, code of companionship and whispered conversation. With the help of a lively blend of archival documents and literary sources, Carmen Martín Gaite admits us to the intricacies of the code and unravels its significance for the women who enjoyed the attention of a cortejo, or escort. Why was the cortejo tolerated, by society and by the woman's aristocratic family, even though it infringed traditional religious precepts? What did woman and her friend talk about at such length? Was their flirtation intellectual, reflecting the effects of Enlightenment rationalism on Spanish culture? Letters, memoirs, and travel journals as well as dramatic works of the period offer invaluable clues to the nature of these relationships, in which the woman was almost ritually adored and placed on a pedestal. The conversation, we learn, was generally frivolous, focusing on possessions and luxuries in a way that clearly signals economic change and the dawn of a material age. At the same time, the cortejo did represent a taste of symbolic liberation for women whose social lives were rigidly constrained.
