The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is a U.S. national park that is located in Skagway, Alaska. The Klondike Gold Rush began on August 17, 1896, when alluvial gold was discovered in Bonanza Creek, a tributary of the Klondike River in the Yukon territory of Canada. The town of Skagway was one of the starting points for the 600-mile trek to the Klondike gold fields. The park contains historic sites and trails associated with the Klondike Gold Rush. The park provides a historical overview of the Klondike Gold Rush and lists its hours of operation, activities, and summer schedule. The U.S. National Park Service provides the information online.

The mission of the National Park Service is “to conserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment of this and future generations” (National Park Service 1999) To uphold this goal, the Director of the NPS approved the Natural Resource Challenge to encourage national parks to focus on the preservation of the nation's natural heritage through science, natural resource inventories, and expanded resource monitoring (National Park Service 1999). Through the challenge, 270 parks in the national park system were organized into 32 inventory and monitoring networks. The Upper Columbia Basin Network (UCBN) consists of nine widely separated NPS units located in western Montana, Idaho, eastern Washington, and central Oregon. Parks of the Upper Columbia Basin Network include: Big Hole National Battlefield (BIHO), City of Rocks National Reserve (CIRO), Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO), Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument (HAFO), John Day Fossil Beds National Monument (JODA), Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (LARO), Minidoka Internment National Monument (MIIN), Nez Perce National Historical Park (NEPE), and Whitman Mission National Historic Site (WHMI). As part of the Natural Resource Challenge, the NPS Water Resources Division received an increase in funding to assess natural resource conditions in national park units. Management oversight and technical support for this effort is provided by the division's Watershed Condition Assessment (WCA) Program. The WCA Program partnered with the Pacific West Region to fund and oversee an assessment at each park in the Upper Columbia Basin Network (UCBN). This report documents the results of the Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) completed for Whitman Mission National Historic Site (WHMI).

This Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) report and accompanying geodatabase is designed to give HAFO resource managers a better understanding of current natural resource conditions within and adjacent to the Monument. Assessments were accomplished through literature review, evaluating existing data, and collection of new data for areas where sufficient, reliable data was not available. Information gained from this assessment will help form the basis for development of actions to mitigate degradation of HAFO's natural resources and assist in the development of desired future conditions through Park management processes. Additionally, an overall description of HAFO natural resources and their history, condition, threats, and stressors are presented throughout this document followed by a summary and management recommendations. All management practices structured toward attaining Proper Functioning Conditions within natural ecosystems will aid NPS resource managers in accomplishing their goals of conservation for future generations.

This report presents the results of riparian condition assessments conducted during July 6-8, 2010 on the Pecos River and lower Glorieta Creek within Pecos National Historical Park, New Mexico. These assessments were intended to inform the Natural Resource Condition Assessment and the Resource Stewardship Strategy now being prepared for the park. The authors used methods described in "A User Guide to Assessing the Proper Functioning Condition and the Supporting Science for Lotic Areas" (USDI 1998) to evaluate 17 hydrology, vegetation, soil and geomorphology elements for three assessment reaches on the Pecos River and one reach on lower Glorieta Creek. The authors then rated the reaches as being in "proper functioning", "functional at-risk" or "nonfunctional" condition. Riparian condition checklists and supporting notes prepared for all assessment reaches are provided in the appendices.

In accordance with National Park Service requirements, staff with the Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership and the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network conducted a natural resource condition assessment (NRCA) for Pea Ridge National Military Park (PERI). NRCA's are intended to provide a synthesized assessment of current conditions in the park. The NCRA for PERI builds on methods developed for a similar effort for Effigy Mounds National Monument. Basic elements of the methodology include (1) reliance on a framework of essential ecological attributes provided by the Environmental Protection agency, (2) development of a list of resource types, indicators, and attributes for assessment, and (3) application of assessments by reporting unit, including park wide, major terrestrial landscapes types, and major streams and tributaries. Current condition was assigned to indicators based on contemporary data and management targets were defined based on best available information, which ranged from quantitative sampling data to expert opinion.
