"Martva" on jatko-osa Algot Untolan suurromaanille "Harhama". Moderniin tyyliin kirjoitettu "Harhama" kertoo Harhama-nimisestä miehestä, joka menettää omaisuutensa ja innostuu sosialismista. Teos oli vielä julkaisuvuonnaan 1909 erikoinen ja tuli muun muassa Eino Leinon lyttäämäksi. "Martva" alkaa kuin oikeudenkäynnistä, jossa käsitellään "Harhaman" saamaa palautetta – ja oikeutta tulla lasketuksi taiteeksi. Tarinan juoni kuitenkin seuraa nuorta paria Martvaa ja Oolavia, jotka ovat vieraantuneet uskonnollisista arvoista. Harhaman tarina kietoutuu heidän tarinaansa, sillä Harhaman kirjoittama "Varoitushuuto" on noussut suosikkikirjaksi, jolta Martva ja Oolavikaan eivät voi välttyä – ja he ottavat kirjasta jopa elämänmallia. Tämä on "Martvan" toinen osa. Irmari Rantamala oli kirjailija Algot Untolan (1868-1918) taiteilijanimi. Untola on suomalaisen kirjallisuushistorian erikoisimpia hahmoja. Hänen elämänsä oli täynnä uskomattomia käänteitä: ensin Untola työskenteli kansakouluopettajana Raahessa ja Viipurissa, mutta muutti vuonna 1900 puutavarakauppiaaksi Pietariin. Pietarissa Untola meni naimisiin, mutta erosi vaimostaan pian häiden jälkeen. Untola muutti Suomeen ja eli susiparina leskirouva Olga Jasinskin kanssa. Riidan päätteeksi Jasinski kaatoi happoa Untolan sukuelimille – ja tutkijoiden mukaan Untola julkaisi näiden tapahtumien jälkeen teoksia vain naisten nimillä. Irmari Rantamalan lisäksi Untolan tunnettuja taiteilijanimiä ovat Maiju Lassila, Väinö Stenberg, J.I. Vatanen, Liisan-Antti ja Jussi Porilainen. Untolan kuuluisin teos on Maiju Lassila -nimellä julkaistu "Tulitikkutyttö".
