Springing from a conference held in Bergamo University on the occasion of the centenary of the publication by Engels of the third book of Capital, the papers collected in these two volumes reinstate Marx's as the first genuinely evolutionary economic theory. In this, the capitalist process incessantly brings about states which will by themselves generate the next ones. Thus as Schumpeter remarked, Marx was the first to 'visualise what even at the present time is still the economic theory of the future for which we are slowly and laboriously accumulating stone and mortar, statistical facts and functional equations'.

'A work of fundamental importance. The most extensive and sophisticated reconstruction of Marx's Capital ever written takes the work of the Unoist school to new heights' - Robert Albritton, Associate Professor of Political Science, York University, Toronto Following the method advanced by Kozo Uno, this book provides an updated version of Marx's economic theory, in its full scope, as described in the three volumes of Das Kapital. It constitutes a dialectical system, consisting of the doctrines of circulation, production and distribution. The whole system defines the 'idea' (or the inner 'programme') of capitalism. More than a hundred years after Marx's death, his economic work is revived here with the analytical rigour expected of modern scientific theory, yet with no concession in substance to bourgeois economics.

Karl Marx's second volume in his monumental criticism of capitalism was prepared by Friedrich Engels from notes left for him and published in 1885 two years after Marx's death. The work is organized into the following three sections: 1. The Metamorphoses of Capital and Their Circuits, 2. The Turnover of Capital, and 3. The Reproduction and Circulation of the Aggregate Social Capital. Where the first volume of Capital focuses mainly on the worker and the industrialist, volume two turns its attention more to the owners of capital, merchants, traders, and entrepreneurs. While this work has been largely overshadowed by its predecessor as well as many of Marx's other works, its contributions to the economic analysis of commodities are undoubtedly worthy additions to the corpus of political economic theory. Though history will most likely continue to charge that Marx's recommendations for solving the inadequacies of the capitalistic system as a failure, his analysis regarding those inadequacies will most assuredly continue be considered as a highly thoughtful analysis of the impact of capitalism upon society and may yet one day help to reform the persistent injustices that seem to be inherent within such a system. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
