Father Luigi Gambero, internationally-known expert on early Christianity, presents a comprehensive survey of the development of Marian doctrine and devotion during the first eight centuries. Focusing on the lives and works of over thirty of the most famous Church Fathers and early Christian writers, Fr. Gambero has produced a clear and readable summary of the richness of the patristic age's theological and devotional approach to the Mother of God. The book contains numerous citations from the works of those men who developed the defining Christological and Mariological positions that have constituted the foundational doctrinal teaching of the Church. Each chapter concludes with an extended reading from the works of the patristic authors. A number of these texts have never before been published in English. The thought of the Fathers and early Christian writers continues to fascinate readers today. Their theological acuity and spiritual depth led them faithfully into the mysteries of Sacred Scripture. Their vast experience made them reliable and trustworthy witnesses to the faith of the people of God.

Henri de Lubac, SJ, (1896-1991) is one of the most renowned theologians of the twentieth century. Numerous studies have been undertaken to examine his many contributions to theology, but little attention has been paid to the specific topic of the relationship of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church in his writings. This was a topic that gave rise to contentious discussion at the Second Vatican Council, and although the Council fathers approved the integration of Marian doctrine into the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, this synthesis of Mariology and ecclesiology has been largely neglected in theology today. The Splendor of the Church in Mary retrieves de Lubac's Marian ecclesiology and revives an understanding and appreciation of its enduring influence at the Vatican Council and beyond. The first part examines de Lubac's pre-conciliar works which evince a steady biblical and patristic ressourcement of Marian themes. It also explores his writings on Teilhard de Chardin's Eternal Feminine, Christian mysticism, and Amida Buddhism and discovers in them the essential building blocks of his Marian thought. The second part turns to the Second Vatican Council and post-conciliar developments. Rereading the debates and texts of Lumen Gentium through a Marian lens brings to light the extent of de Lubac's influence: Méditation sur l'Eglise (1953), his principal work on Mary and the Church, anticipated the structure and content of Lumen Gentium a decade before the Council. De Lubac's writings provided a theological compass for the Council fathers, and they continue to provide direction and orientation for ecclesiological discourse today. The Splendor of the Church in Mary culminates in a constructive analysis of one of the most pressing pastoral and ecclesiological questions of our times: the question of the relationship of the universal and particular churches. Directly engaging the crucial debate between then-Cardinal Ratzinger and Cardinal Kasper, it proposes that de Lubac's Mariology effectively offers a new perspective and a refreshing path forward. Attentive to the mystical identification of Mary and the Church, de Lubac's ressourcement has the potential to re-enchant and advance contemporary theology in new and significant ways.

What ever happened to the Virgin Mary in the modern Catholic Church? For the past forty years her presence has been radically minimized. In a groundbreaking work, Charlene Spretnak cuts across the battle lines delineated by the left and the right within the Church to champion the recovery of the full spiritual presence of Mary. Spretnak, a liberal Catholic, asserts that a deep loss ensues for women in particular when Mary's female embodiment of grace and mystical presence is denied and replaced with a strictly text-bound version of her as a Nazarene housewife. Complete with a striking insert of contemporary Marian art, Missing Mary is a deeply insightful reflection on Mary in the modern age.

The Blessed Virgin Mary is uniquely associated with Catholicism, and the century preceding the Second Vatican Council was arguably the most fertile era for Catholic Marian studies. In 1964, Pope John Paul VI published the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, or Lumen Gentium (LG), the eighth chapter of which presents the most comprehensive magisterial teaching on the Blessed Virgin Mary. As part of its Marian Initiative, the Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame invited scholars to a conference held at Notre Dame in October 2013 to reflect the rich Marian legacy on the eve of the Second Vatican Council. The essays unanimously stress that the Blessed Virgin Mary is not merely a peripheral figure in Christian faith and in the panorama of theology. More than fifty years after Lumen Gentium, students of theology as well as Marian devotees take their bearings from this document in order to promote the person of Mary and the study of Mariology, as well as grow in authentic Marian piety. This book will have great appeal to students and scholars of Catholic theology and history, particularly those interested in Mariology. Contributors: Ann W. Astell, Peter Casarella, John C. This collection of rosary meditations taken from the writings of the Fathers of the Church allows the reader, for the first time, to bring the insights of Sacred Tradition into the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary. We know well, as true sons and daughters of Holy Mother Church, that the Truths of the Catholic Faith come to us both through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, indeed, St. Paul writes, “Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions we taught you, whether by speech or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15). How little time, alas, do we give to the sayings of the ancient fathers, how little attention towards their words of reflection, and yet, what riches can be found in their insights, as they ponder upon the events of salvation history, and share from the Fountain of Wisdom that, in one manner, was so much closer to their lips than it is to ours. Drawing from diverse authors, both those canonically held as ‘Fathers’, but also other ancient writers of the First Millennium of Christianity, this book will serve as a faithful companion to any committed Catholic who is desirous of ‘going deeper’ in contemplation of the Holy Rosary, and to do so in a manner which seeks neither novelty nor the theological fashions of today, but the wisdom of the earliest saints of our Holy Religion. You will find here hundreds of carefully selected paragraphs of meditation, chosen in and through prayer. You will find points for every bead of the traditional rosary, as well as the additional mysteries proposed by Pope John Paul II and The Hopeful Mysteries, introduced in an earlier work by the same author, which bring to the faithful’s consideration events concerning Our Lady and Salvation History prior to the Annunciation. This is a book to be kept alongside your rosary beads, to be brought out at adoration, to be carried on retreat, to be shared with your children in family prayers and to be passed on to those who wish to grow in prayer, and in the greatest of all the prayers of popular piety, the Holy Rosary. “The book is a wonderful composition of devotional meditations that lead the reader through a deeply meaningful and intimate journey in prayer and inspiration”—Holly Rodriguez (Illustrator, poet and founder of Beatific Artworks) About the Author: Fr. Mark Higgins is a priest of the Archdiocese of Southwark, England. He is also the editor of The Holy Rosary, through the Visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich.
