Desde que comecei a trabalhar com marketing, há quase 30 anos, minha maior dificuldade era dizer para as pessoas em uma frase o que eu fazia. Por conta da minha curiosidade, procurei, nos autores do campo, explicações sobre o significado daquilo que vivia no meu dia a dia profissional e confesso que fiquei cada vez mais confusa com o que lia a respeito, já que não me conformava com a constatação de que marketing era complexo, difícil de definir e que estava em tudo. Como sou formada em Estatística, assim que comecei a trabalhar, perguntava para as pessoas o que era marketing e, a cada vez, recebia uma resposta diferente: "marketing constrói marcas fortes", "marketing é um pouco de tudo o que você experimenta ao consumir um produto", "marketing é uma experiência que se cria entre a marca e seus consumidores", "marketing é uma estratégia", e muitas outras. Tornou-se natural dizer que marketing é muito difícil de explicar, e parece que as pessoas aceitaram esse pressuposto sem indagações, contra-argumentações ou desconfortos. Durante uma formatura de um curso de graduação em Publicidade com ênfase em Marketing, ouvi, no discurso da oradora da turma, que, após quatro anos de faculdade, ela ainda não conseguia explicar com clareza o que marketing fazia. A aluna não me pareceu preocupada, inconformada ou insatisfeita; ao contrário, demonstrou ser uma constatação inerente à profissão que escolheu trilhar. Depois de todas as tentativas, ainda não me sentindo satisfeita, mesmo após 20 anos de experiência na área, resolvi fazer dessa angústia meu objeto de pesquisa.
