Why is child sexual abuse committed primarily by men and male adolescents, unlike other forms of child abuse? Is child sex offending, rather than being a deviant masculine sexual practice, related to normative masculine practices, that is, practices structured on dynamic and changing relations of power? Using a practice-based sociological approach, the relationship between masculinities, sexualities and child sexual abuse is analysed and the power/powerlessness theory is developed to explain the predominantly male problem of child sex offending. The theory postulates that, because the social construction of masculinities involves the construction of dynamic and changing relations of power between men, men's lives are characterised by a combination of power and powerlessness. The book argues that an offender's experiences of powerlessness as a result of his relationships with other men is the key to understanding child sex offending, since sexuality is a key social practice for the alleviation of experiences of powerlessness and for establishing relations of power with other men. In particular, the theory argues that a man's particular attachment to the link between sexuality and experiences of masculinity and power will be a key factor for determining how he does sex and whom he chooses as a sexual partner. In the final chapter, the theory is tested through a re-analysis of offender interviews.

The best way to understand male sexual abuse is to learn about its survivors. They are the victims, and they have stories to tell. Author OBrien Dennis recounts how he was sexually abused as a boy in Jamaica, and he also shares accounts from other men who were abused. By giving them a voice, he unveils how male sexual abuse can so easily happen at the hands of close and trusted family, friends and even strangers. As you read these intimate stories, youll learn how societys narrow definitions of sexuality and masculinity have conspired to silence male victims, preventing many from speaking up about their abuse. Sexual abuse hurts victims, who may later suffer from drug addiction, sexual dysfunction, self-blame, guilt, and other problems. Male rape is used not only as a form of subjugation but also as a tool for war and dominance in contemporary wars and conflicts. Male sexual abuse is underreported, and it is estimated that one in six boys is sexually abused before he reaches age sixteen. By Understanding Male Sexual Abuse, its possible to start exploring solutions to a terrible problem. Dennis calls on policy makers and public administrators to raise their heads from their sheaves of paper and to pay attention to the many men who are victims of rape in prisons or other institutions, and to see that male sexual abuse is more than a public health hazard; rather, it rips at the fabric of society and humanity. Sexual Difference is a critical exploration of psychoanalytic theories of sexual difference. In particular it explores the way in which masculinity is expressed in theory and practice. Developing from the unsettling impact of these issues on the author's own professional practice, Stephen Frosh examines how the very language and structure of psychoanalysis are loaded with assumptions about gender. Employing both Kleinian and Lacanian theoretical perspectives this book critically examines these approacheds to sexial difference. In addition, it discusses the application of these issues in the practice of treating sexual violence and in cases of child secual abuse. Sexual Difference will be of value to all trainees and professionals in psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychology and social work, as well as all those with an interest in `masculinity', `femininity' and their effects.

Cases of sport-related child sexual abuse have received increasing news coverage in recent years. This book documents and evaluates this important issue through a critical investigation of the research and theory on sexual violence and child sex offending that has emerged over the past thirty years. Based on life-history interviews with male and female ‘survivors’ of child sexual abuse in sport, this text offers a deeper appreciation for the experiences of those who are sexually victimized within sports and school-sport settings. Drawing on a wide range of sources, it also provides a new theoretical framework through which child sexual abuse in sport may be explored. Offering a critique spanning psychology, sociology and criminology, this book challenges existing theories of sex offending while advocating an alternative epistemology to help better understand and address this social problem. Presenting an original sociological approach to this field of study, Sexual Abuse in Youth Sport is important reading for any researcher, policy-maker or practitioner working in youth sport, physical education, sports coaching, sport policy, child protection or social work.

The purpose of this research is to examine the current assumptions of child sexual abuse prevention in light of the new research and theories that have developed over the last two decades. This research presents a feminist, decolonizing perspective on child sexual abuse prevention and explores an extended feminist perspective linking child sexual abuse to the social construction of masculinity, male sexual socialization, and hierarchical masculinities. I perform an analysis of prevention research and materials to compare what is taught, where it is taught, and to whom it is taught to the public knowledge of, research on, and reality of abuse. From this analysis, I argue the prevention of child sexual abuse must result from a significant ideological and structural change in our culture. The paper concludes with new and practical guidelines for child sexual abuse prevention aimed at preventing the socialization of future abusers.

What About the Children! takes up the important task of examining the role of hegemonic masculinities in propping up a normative social order in which children are constructed as the property of adults. By examining adult-child relations in the context of a wide range of family forms and social contexts, the book provides some hard answers to questions relating to what exactly are the best interests of children, and how they should be determined. The book responds by suggesting that there is a pressing need to recognise the capacity of children to voice their own desires and needs, and that in failing to recognise this all adults (and men in particular) only serve to further perpetuate a possessive logic that, at least in part, gives rise to the mistreatment or abuse of children. Covering topics such as the experiences of foster fathers, gay adoptive fathers and sperm donors, and exploring phenomena such as books on raising boys and movies about gay parents, the book offers important insights as to the operations of hegemony in the lives of a broad range of men. Importantly, the book moves beyond simply identifying the operations of hegemony in relation to possessive investments in children, and goes on to propose a ‘non-indifferent’ approach to understanding adult-child relations that at its heart examines the operations of power that produce children as supposedly docile subjects (and only certain adults as capable of caring for them). As a result, the book makes a significant contribution to setting an alternative agenda for child protection both within Australia and internationally by asking the question ‘protection for whom?’.

Closing The Justice Gap For Adult And Child Sexual Assault written by Anne Cossins and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-21 with Social Science categories.

This book examines the justice gap and trial process for sexual assault against both adults and children in two jurisdictions: England and Wales and New South Wales, Australia. Drawing on decades of research, it investigates the reality of the policing and prosecution of sexual assault offences – often seen as one of the ‘hardest crimes to prosecute’ – across two similar jurisdictions. Despite the introduction of the many reform options detailed in the book, satisfactory outcomes for victims and the public are still difficult to obtain. Cossins takes a new approach by examining the nature and effects of adversarialism on vulnerable witnesses, jury decision-making and the structures of power within the trial process, to show how, and at what points, that process is weighted against complainants of sexual assault, in order to make evidence-based suggestions for reform. She argues that this justice gap is a result of a moralistic adversarial culture which fosters myths and misconceptions about rape and child sexual assault, thus requiring the prosecution to prove a complainant’s moral worthiness. She argues this culture can only be eliminated by a radical replacement of the adversarial system with a trauma-informed system. By reviewing the relevant psychological literature, this book documents the triggers for re-traumatisation within an adversarial trial, and discusses the reform measures that would be necessary to transform the sexual assault trial from one where the complainant’s moral worthiness is ‘on trial’ to a fully functioning trauma-informed system. It speaks to students and academics across subjects including law, criminology, gender studies and psychology, and practitioners in law and victim services, as well as policy-makers.
